We have a business of 4 iMacs "partnered" w/ 4 MacBook Airs (each person has a desktop, a laptop, an iPad, and an iPhone).

All systems are running Yosemite 10.10.x (getting the table of which has which).

They are connecting Mac Mail to a hosted Exchange 2010 server.

It has been observed that mail is quickly and reliably delivered to systems running Mac Mail 8.2 (2070.6).

Those systems running Mac Mail 8.2 (2098) will have significant (hours) delays in delivery of mail, OR, they only receive mail when Mac Mail is quit and relaunched.

I don't think I can "fix" Mac Mail, but do any of you have suggestions for rolling back 2098 to 2070.6 (or copying over the core of 2070.6 from another system)?

(This is actually a relatively critical issue for these guys).

This is a pet peeve of mine with OS X compared to Windoze. The inability to roll back any updates. In the past you could drill into the installation image and pull many of the individual packages out, such as Mail.pkg to re-install. Even then results are not predictable due to dependencies with other updated packages. After 10.7 it went to a giant tarball. So your only option is to backup volatile data and do a Time Machine restore from when Mail was working OK and make sure auto updates are off.

Have you looked at the logs to see if there are any hints?

Hi Mark - it is that dependency that I am most concerned with.

I would love to simply substitute one copy for another... but know that the interdependency between applications and libraries will likely break something else.

Thank you @FremontPC - we've tried that... but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference with Exchange.... (and yes, our autodiscover is working just fine =) )...

But one of the suggestions in the comments on that page was "use TB".... hmmmm.... I wonder if that will make them happy.... worth considering. This afternoon they were even tossing around live grenades like "Outlook 2011"... so they might be open to TB.

Mail.app has had problems for a while. The good news is that there is a major upgrade coming with El Capitan.

For clients that had problems, I would switch them to https://www.postbox-inc.com/ which is an improvement for Exchange and gmail over Mail.

But I see the price has gone up to $15, I think it used to be $10. There is a free 30 day trial. For the users I have switched, its been worth it.

@altrenda : do you know if postbox allows for direct drag/drop of attachments FROM email to folders in finder? I know Outlook 2011 does not, which is just 1 of the reasons they love Mac Mail (even though it is a barely functional program).

($15 for single license, $10 for quantities over 1).

Postbox licenses are per user, so one license will cover any/all machine(s) you personally use, on Mac, PC or both!

So they would be looking at potentially $40 to fix their headache... very interested!

Yes it does, I just tried it.
And even though it says 10.9 or later, I have it on my work Black MacBook running 10.7.5 and it works fine.

Thank you for this @altrenda .... I stopped looking beyond Mail, Outlook, and TB. If this works... oh man, this will be a 1 year problem that has been a thorn in my side.

Hmmm:

  • Can I use Postbox to get mail from my Exchange server?
Postbox currently supports POP3, IMAP, and SMTP protocols, so if your administrator has those protocols turned on in Exchange, then you can use Postbox to send and receive mail from those servers. Postbox does not currently support native Exchange protocols.

So PostBox may handle the email better... which of course, would be great... but not true integration. Still - it is worth a shot.

Interesting stuff.
I have some experience with Postbox, which is a fork of Thunderbird that was mainly set up to maximize working with gmail. I have not had problems with the Exchange users I have on it.

I have run across ExQuilla but had problems a while back in Thunderbird that I can't remember. It doesn't work with Postbox.

I have not used davmail, but I am downloading it now and will see how it works. It's a shame it's still on Sourceforge, uBlock Origin throws up a warning before I can go there. The bastardization of Sourceforge by the new owners is very sad.
