MAC iso

I have a gig coming up soon working on MacBooks and I don't have much experience with them. I did let them know this upfront but they assured me the tasks would be easy enough with my understanding of processes. We will be primarily copying files to USB drive, backup passwords, some screenshots and possibly some other tasks. Once this is done, we will reimage them. Even though they know my knowledge of MAC OS is limited, I would still like to be as prepared as possible. There will be MAC tech's onsite if I get stuck. My thought was to set up MAC Sierra, High Sierra or something similar in VirtualBox for some experimenting. How can I get a copy of one of these iso's without having a MAC to download it to?

I would recommend picking up a used iMac/MacBook on Amazon or ebay so you can have a reference machine to play with at your leisure. There are many choices for just a few hundred dollars. Good investment if you expect to work on any macs at all. Maybe something like this?

And if one doesn't need portable a Macmini is also a great selection. In fact you can hook it up to a USB KVM to switch back and forth.

I think your suggestion is excellent. You can pick up a used Mac for a good price. I’d consider a Mini or a 2012 MacBook Pro for a little more flexibility.

I've made some progress but stuck on the VirtualBox install.
Host machine: W10 64b
VB version 6.1

I'm trying to install Lion and followed the steps found a few different places including the link below. It says to uncheck Enable EFI on the System tab and select the ISO location from local DVD. I've tried it with EFI enabled & Disabled, iso source being in downloads, on DVD and on the root of C. With it on the root of C and EFI Enabled, it tries to install but errors out and then just freezes at a white screen with the VB multi-colored wheel.

With EFI Disabled, it gives an error that it can't find the boot disc.

I'll take a look at it in an hour two. Got a Lenovo T450 I can test it on. Which version of VB are you using @BO Terry?

6.1.4 currently. I'm also going to run it on an older version and see what happens. I will update when I have done this. I also plan to keep an eye out for something like a MAC Mini or MacBook if I get into anything more than this one gig.

I tried on VB version 4.3.28 and it wouldn't even run. VB 5.2.38 had the same results as 6.1.4.

Actually it's a T430. At any rate the good news is I got the same symptoms you did. EFI on, pin wheels during boot against the ISO, EFI off no boot device. Bad news obviously I have no idea why.

You said you burned the ISO to a DVD, I did not try that route. Was that RAW? With EFI off you can hit F something to select a boot device. Was that what you tried?

Another possible option is VMware. I know I tested this with a customer a long time ago. There's an unlocker file which allows VMware to load and run OS X.

Bummer! Yes, I burned the ISO to DVD using IMGBurn. No way to validate Beyond the self check built into the burn process. I tried setting the “blank” optical drive to the DVD but that didn’t work either. I tried F(12 I think it was) and then each choice in turn. Same result.

I haven’t tried VMWare, actually haven’t worked with it at all. Is there a free version of it? I will check in the am.

thanks for taking a look!

I'm going to try with VMware (Ver 15.5) today but I seem to recall an unlocker is required to install any MAC OS. Any known/trusted sources for this unlocker?

The official distro is on github so you can be fairly sure it's legit.

Edit: I have done OS X on ESXi several times. I also seem to remember I tried it on Workstation or Player once.

@Markverhyden, you are amazing! I have Version 10.7.5 installed in VM! Thank you so much for your generosity of time and knowledge! When I get back to the office later, I plan to start poking around in this environment.

Mac OS Lion is pretty old.

There's also macOS 10.15 Catalina that shipped in September 2019.

True, but it was the only full iso I was able to get a copy of. Hopefully in the future, I may get a copy of a newer one.
