A terrible client calls me, they are terrible because they are always cheap, take forever to pay, I have to get them on retainer now because they take so long to pay. I strictly only fix things for these people when they need it which is like every 4-5 months. Even if I did MSP I wouldn't onboard them because they are that bad.

They call me because they can't login to their email. The email they use is roundcube webmail hosted at justhost.com - LOL already pretty good right?

Anyways I finally get them logged into their email but they haven't been receiving mail for several days. Do a quick DNS lookup and their MX is broken, their website is down and the A record is broken, basically looks like a lapsed payment on the domain.

I do a whois on them and their domain registrar ... GET THIS ... is: https://domainjamboreellc.com/
support email? domainjamboree1@gmail.com

LOL

I goto the website and its literally nothing! Check it out for yourself: https://domainjamboreellc.com/

I called the number and the line goes straight to automatic voicemail. My client is in CA and the domain registrar is in WY. I literally don't even know what to tell these people, or how they even got hooked up with them.

Do they have any options? Their domain expires in a year, is the only option to wait for expiration and then purchase it elsewhere?

It should be a fun conversation because I think they'd be more willing to give up the domain they've had for 20 years rather than pay me a few thousand to figure it out.

You'd think an email or phone call would be made if that was a client of their's for 20 years lol.

if the domain expires in one year then i would expect they still have access to the domain registrar account. If this is the case then you can transfer the domain name to another registrar at any time. Although, given the gmail contact email, i don't hold out much hope.

They are so completely unorganized that I can basically assume that any time I need any sort of credentials they are unknown or will require password resets.

So the chances of them having login credentials for this rigged up registrar are less than .01 percent.

So? Contact the registrar. So long as they didn't use fake information when signing up, they should be able to get them access to the account so long as they can prove their identity (SSN, EIN, name, address, calling from the phone number they have on file, etc.). If the registrar won't just let you in, they probably have a recovery email on file that the rep can give you. Then all you've gotta do is recover the password for the email account.

I deal with this crap every time I design or work on a website. It's annoying, but not the worst thing by far. I don't think I've ever had a client that knew their registrar login information.

Yes, already tried that ... the registrar's contact number goes straight to a robo voicemail and the email is a gmail account. I contact them through both and I'll see if I get a response.

Then you go ICANN, and now it's legal. In the meantime have them buy a new domain, because you're going to be waiting awhile.

Oh, and bill the piss out of them for their rampant stupidity.

I think those two are made for each other. As other's said I'd stop wasting time with the company and go to ICANN. I'd also send registered return receipt letters to the registrar, local BBB, and the who ever handles business registrations in in Laramie.
