I personally use Photoshop. I'd like to use Gimp but I've been using Photoshop so long I could teach classes on it by now. lol
And I just had this conversation last night, actually. I started in web design - which started my business - this month, 14 years ago. I started with just the name and decided I needed a logo. I've changed my logo for what it seems like every few months since then for better branding.
After all these years, it wasn't until just recently that I started using only the name as my logo and fully intend on leaving it that way. I have a unique font, unique name, relatively easy to say and spell, it made sense.
After I changed it to that, I've received feedback from my clients and they like it. It's simple, clean and easily recognizable. So, if you have a good enough name, learn from me and focus on that and let it stand. A lot easier for clients to remember and refer out than "that guy with the squiggly thing." lol
