Logmein's Continued Insanity

I guess I'm in the minority here. I bought teamviewer just before version 8 came out and was upgraded for free to version 8. I've stuck to that version and it offers everything I need for a one man shop.

They do keep pestering me about upgrading non stop. They also add UPGRADE NOW popups on my client's machines which is annoying. Some do upgrade every now and then and I have to "downgrade" it by installing teamviewer 10 on a virtual machine to remote into the new version, uninstall, put my custom teamviewer 8 setup file ont he desktop, tell client by phone to "double click the blue box, no not the icon with no blue in it at all, the BLUE BOX, it has a white circle... with blue arrows inside... it says TEAMVIEW... oh god damn it I'll drive right over..

What was I saying? oh, dont buy teamviewer.

In SC the software client updates is from your host server, If you have the version 5.3, install a lot of clients with the 5.3, then you update your server to the 5.4 and end the support for your version, your clients continue with the version 5.3 and you see in your control panel what version have the client.
If the ScreenConnect company update to version 6, your clients dont know that, becuase your clients ask for updates to your host server.
And you will do the update from the clients selecting all clients and click on "Re-Install". Or you will config in the options of your server to auto update clients. The update is from your version installed and the update is from your server.

Don't forget you get a discount with the technibble business kit.

I purchased the 2x license, It works great, but I may upgrade to 3x concurrent sessions. I have it self hosted behind a fixed ip address, and I had alot of trouble getting it to work right with my phone company router, but it has been working great since I put the phone company router into bridge mode and installed an Untangle box for my company.

Be careful with using an IP addres, the ISP IP address sometimes change, or we want to change ISP, and has a big problem. Do this o something like this:

For Static IP:

Add an "A Record" in the control panel for your Domain.
Host: fix Point: Your Public Static IP
then you have fix.yourdomain.com

For Dynamic IP:

Install Dynamic IP updater (No-ip, DynDNS etc)
Add an "Cname (Alias)"
Host: fix Point to: Your Dynamic DNS Name for example: fixdsfdf.no-ip.com
Then you have fix.yourdomain.com

With the advantage of vanity and easy name to enter the clients, and we will change ISP at any time or server company at any time.

Yes, I do have an A record for my domain pointing to my static IP. I just omitted that detail.

I've used TeamViewer for years. You pay for one time for the current version and use it as much as you want. The problem arises when they release a new version... you don't have to upgrade, but if for some reason your clients upgraded their version, then you suddenly can't connect.

Yes that's a big problem, in teamviewer you "don't need" to update, but in the client side show update, a new version, new features and blah blah, the clients then update.

Then many clients update and you update, and again and again.

I don't like that.
In SC I have support to Windows 10 now, if I don't want to update the next year, simple no problems, all my clients continue working fine.
And I see other advantage, the same client will have many ScreenConnect versions, for example the same client will have installed the unattended version and the quick connection. Don't need to close the other version.

Yes we are looking at cancelling our logmein subscription too from about $250 two years ago, $500 last year and a whopping $1500 this year for basic central, going to check out some options mentioned above - nice post title LogMeIn Insanity but their share price seems to be on the up

I'm sure it is. Lots of horrible companies do horrible stupid things and their stocks go up anyway. (In fact, stockholders seem to like that...). Anyway I had about the same rate as you...around $250-300, which is fine...but to go up from that to $1500 is just...insane.

I was leaning towards Teamviewer but the posts here have changed my mind. I can guarantee my clients WILL click the upgrade button if Teamviewer bugs them to do it, and then I'll get locked out and that's a big problem. It doesn't matter if I tell them not to do it...they do it every time with Avast and throw money at them the minute they see a popup. (I should get in the popup business..."Click HERE to throw money at Techlady! CLICK NOW!" Because I would be rich in short order).

The main problems I have with Screenviewer is it is such a pain to set up, and then the UI is just plain clunky--or that's how it looks when you've used everything else. It's just hideous. I could maybe overlook this if it weren't such a pain to set up as well, but alas...

pain to set up

I don't know where you are getting the idea that its a pain to setup. I think it took me less then 5 minutes to get it up and running.

Before they released their cloud product there was a 14 day trial of the self hosted solution that you could of tried. I can't find that on their website now. However if you are worried about setting it up etc... their cloud solution is a hell of a lot cheaper if you don't have a crazy amount of nodes.

If you wanted to go down the self hosted route it might be worth contacting them and seeing if they will offer you the trial.

I do agree with you on the UI it is very dated!

Sometimes we see a thing is hard to do, but after start we see was more easy than we see starting it.

Today was for me, I move the ScreenConnect Windows Instalation to Linux Server (5USD/Month).
Now I have 2 servers, My current instalation at home and 1 installed in DigitalOcean to test before production.
I will use the 2 server for testing.

If have any problem PM, I will help you, I will be able to make one and one session help to install it.

Using ScreenConnect hosted on Azure which I get as part of my Microsoft Partner Network Subscription. Wasn't that bad to setup and have never gone anywhere near the limit. Also 10% per year to upgrade after the initial purchase.

We love SimpleHelp but apparently we are the only ones using it lol

I switched to SimpleHelp after my LogMeIn fiasco and used it for a while. I ended up with ScreenConnect.

For those who have quit LogMeIn, you might want to put a block on your credit card. Even after our parting of ways over a year ago, they still occasionally try to charge my credit card.

Rescue raised my rates from $66 to $77 for one seat.No notice of the price hike, so I called and they said, "oh you're unhappy about the $11?" and I said, "well, until I can remote into an iPhone, I guess I don't see what made the price go up, it's not a better product, it's the same" and the rep said, "How about in Dec when your next seat is up for renewal, we will keep that one at $66"

Ok fine.

Married to LMIR, so for $240 a year to pay for a divorce..... I still can't even think of leaving it. Now my clients are trained to use it too.

I raise my prices too and don't tell the clients I guess. If they say "oh you raised your prices since the last time I helped" I say "Yeah, but I'm faster now so you pay less actually"

I wish I could remote into iPhones!!!

How do you get such low prices? I started at $99 for one seat about 8 years ago, about 3 years ago they raised me to $109 for one seat no notice I just see the increase on my bill. I complained and all I got was an offer for half off on mobile support. I tested it and honestly couldn't get it to work they said AT&T was blocking it....but I was to comfortable and lazy to shop around and test other products. 2 months ago they raise me again no notice to $119. for one seat. Just before that I was contemplating calling them to ask for a lower price from the $109. then I saw the $119. I complained harder this time and they agreed to keep me at $109 but the sour taste was still in my mouth. I cancelled and went to Citrix Go to Assist $59.00 a month and that includes mobile devices. I only tested on Samsung phones but it worked. The remote support product is not as robust as LMIR but the price was right for me.

Numnutz, where the hell have you been??? Good to see you back!

I started with them in 2008 I think and paid the $100 or so, then I added on seats and they lowered my prices each year by a few bucks here and there. I don't know how I got the lower prices to be honest, I don't think it was because I added on seats. I only had 4 at the most, then I backed down to 2. I have one for emergency and for larger migrations.

And btw....I know of another person who only pays $55 a month and as much as I tried, could never get it lowered down from $66.

we have used a site called Splashtop for 2 years now. love the product, has some good features. and is well priced.
I use Splashtop and I see some problems:

Cons:
1. The reconnection if I lost the connection is too hard to re-connect.
2. Not easy to use for remote support, more for own computers.
3. Not send files from the host to the client or client to host.
4. No safe Mode

Pros:

1. Very Very fast video stream
2. Price!!

I check it for the video fast stream, but I see that's tool is not for me.

Since they released the v3.0.0.2 of the streamer, i found it fixed a bunch of issues.
1. its now a service, so when you logoff/change users, it remains connected.
2. I find majority of computers about 98% don't have connection issues anymore.

I use it to send/receive files all the time... only issue i don't like is you can't do other stuff during file transfers

We more so use it for regular clients so that we can manage their computers unattended.

Not as good as logmein used to be... but for price you can't go wrong.
And they seem to be getting better all the time.
