LogMeIn rescue - First impressions

:D:D:D Very nice!!! I was about to sign up for another remote support solution and then thought about trying a couple others before settling for basically the first one I picked. I'm an avid fan of TeamViewer for its simplicity while offering a lot of features as well as the ease of use for the customer.

Well, LMI-Resc is like having a full office suite of features vs just one program. It also has some really nice features of admin groups, technician groups and sub-groups of each. All this is very nice if working with more then one technician (employee) or if needing to share access with a site admin or site technician.

It looks to be a great choice if you are a very competent tech and are busy as many of the features are there to save time going through normal routes to access the information.

I'm also going to look at Remote Utilities as it looks promising as well and may be a great backup (let alone a stand-alone product) app that is strictly software driven (kind of like Teamviewer).

I still think that these companies should develop a method for self hosting their software as due to some specific security concerns, there are some customers I wouldn't be running through a 3rd party server while having full access to their PC.

That's the main reason I chose ScreenConnect. I don't like to entrust my customer's data security to a third party.
 
On the other hand, you have to wonder if ones own ability to secure a self-hosted server is going to be better than LogMeIn's.
 
We've been using LMI Rescue for a little over a year and couldn't be happier with it. We use it for clients that don't have our desktop rmm agent which uses LMI Pro.

True enough.

I think, for me at least, it's a matter of being in control though.

I can check if my own server is secure and I can do something about it if it isn't. If the likes of LogMeIn's security lapses, I probably won't know about it until there's a major breach.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the servers of services such as LogMeIn are a much bigger target, with greater potential rewards, than any personal server and therefore much more likely to be targeted by hackers.

This is exactly what I was thinking along with the potential of a rogue employee at LMI possibly skimming info (It's been known to happen in many companies). It's like having a honey pot, but this honey pot isn't a fake lure/trap, it's their servers.

We all know that there are many very high end stores that have lots of customer data on some pretty wealthy clients but the chances of them being hacked vs the big corps like those in the recent media, are much lower.

Security through obscurity I believe is the correct term.

Not something you should rely solely upon of course, but coupled with other descent security measures, security through obscurity can be quite effective.

.... certainly it worked for Apple for a long time ;)


For example, just look at all the WordPress hacks and attacks, continuously making the news these days. It's not because WP is any less secure than similar solutions, it's just that it's very popular.
 
Expensive is right, yowzah! While I chose to go with ScreenConnect, I still keep my LMI Central account active, and have thought about doing a trial (if that exists) of LMI Rescue to test and see how good of a product it is.
