local access only - I hate vista lol

Its been awhile, but I have ran across another laptop, an HP, with vista, that sees my network as local only..

I have ran the netsh commands, norton removal tool, removed trend micro, dont see any signs of virus, etc.

i searched the forum, and thought I had seen a hotfix for this, or someone had developed a solution..but I cant seem to find it.

suggestions?
 
I just hooked it up to my iphone wifi tethering app and i can get on the internet just fine...could it be the network security messing this up? I am confused though as I have two other laptops in here with the same OS and they sign on to my business wireless network just fine..
 
Is the system getting a valid IP and gateway address? What does IPConfig /all output? I'm pretty sure you will have already checked this xxsilk109xx, but it's worth asking :)

I have seen this on systems where there is an alternative config set up which isn't valid.
 
here is the ipconfig results...i noticed a couple things different from my own..
a lot of tunnel adapter local area connection
node type is hybrid

what do you think?

I take it you are using IPV4, and not IPV6?

Doesn't look like the adaptor is getting an IP address.

Can you ping 127.0.0.1?
Does the PC get a valid IP address if you use the LAN connection and not not the wireless adaptor?
 
Ok - I plug it in LAN and it works and its getting an IP address...

I can also ping 127.0.0.1 when LAN plugged in..

(embarrassed) how do i tell or know whether im IPV4 or 6??

No surprise there.

So what exactly do you need help with?
 
To be honest I don't use IPv6 as there there isn't much use for it in the home yet. Consumer routers are only just starting to support it. I no expert either. But I know a IPV6 address when I see one.

If you unplug the Lan and move back to the wireless adapter, can you ping 127.0.0.1?

with the LAN unplugged I can ping 127.0.0.1
for some reason I cant copy and paste from command into here anymore....

the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 -nothing else

link-local ipv6 address: (looks similar to yours above)
 
when i connect through my iphone i dont see any IPv6 information, and the gateway goes to 192.168.20.1

there is also no DHCPv6 entries either..
 
Run CMD as an administrator and run the following to output the results to a txt file. But without the iphone.

ipconfig /all >C:\ipconfig.txt
 
here it is hooked up to my office network.
note: i unchecked the ipv6 box in the adapter settings and still get local only..

That looks fine to me as long as 192.168.0.1 is your gateway.

Just out of interest is the active network set to Home, work or public?
 
well it's clear wired is working so the next question is are you detecting the wireless network and if so is it asking for the key?
 
yes it asks for the key and I enter it and it connects, but it says local only...
when hooked up to my iphone via wifi, not usb, it works fine
LAN works fine.

all the other computers in my office right now that are wireless work fine on the network.
