LED Backlight help

I have a customer with a newer ASUS laptop, just out of warranty and her screen went dim, no backlight.

Figured out it was an LED screen due to the fact that there was no LCD inverter. Ordered another screen, brand new Samsung and it too, is dim. There is a picture but no backlight.

I have reseated the cable at the screen and the motherboard, still no difference in result.

Anything else that I can try? It works fine when hooked up to an external monitor.

Replacing the cable would seem the most likely resolution.

There is also the possibility of motherboard damage where the video cable connects to it.

Unfortunately, LED backlight issues tend to be a little more guessing than CFL backlight issues. Unless someone has something extremely insightful about how to test them, that is....

Usually I check for a stuck sleep switch before ordering any parts. Beyond that, I don't have much else that I do in the way of diagnostics (yet.). Thankfully I've only had to deal with on dead LED backlight so far.

Never had a problem with one but maybe if it is hardware it will be the same with a live cd? Give that a try to confirm.

A live cd wouldn't tell you anything as it's not software related.

any idea where the lid switch is on an Asus K05i?

I cant seem to see it and I cant find a service manual on the net. I have a feeling this is the issue, however I cant seem to find this switch!!

Neat! At first I was thinking that wasn't going to help with LED backlights...because it said CCFL on it....

I might have to get one of these...or maybe build my own.

Does anyone have a clue to where the lid switch is for this laptop? I cant seem to find it and think that it may be the issue.

If someone has access to ASUS service manuals, that would be great too.

I thought about that and looked in the lid for something magnetic and dont see anything, I will keep looking though.

im having the same problem with a lenovo laptop
the screen came in smashed and both of the screens i got stay dim

I am just baffled at how the computer knows if the lid is closed or not. This is mind boggling

must be metal somewhere on the lid that connects to a magnet. As small as they are now, who knows.

UPDATE -

Ok, I have replaced the screen, and the led cable with the same results still. I have reset all options in the BIOS to factory settings and it works when hooked up to external monitor.

I have, with the new hardware installed, hooked it up to an external monitor and when I close the lid it does not shut off or go into sleep mode. Even when disconnected from the external monitor, when I close the lid it does not go to sleep which tells me that it HAS to be a lid switch problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where this contraption might be??

In the power Settings, didn't you stop it from going into Sleep or Standby mode when the lid is closed as a test. If so, did you undo this, as this would result in what you are currently seeing.
