LCD Screen and Warcraft issue....please help

I had a customer come in that had a laptop that she had dropped and the screen was not working anymore. I hooked up the lcd inverter to a known good screen and everything worked fine, so i decided that the screen needed replaced. I ordered the screen of of ebay, I installed the screen, turned it on, everything worked just fine, or so it seems. She brings it back to me telling me that there is a slight buzzing sound and after about 15 minutes of use the screen shuts off but the computer is still on. So she brings it back to me and I to hear this buzzing so I tear into it and it sounds like it is coming from the LCD inverter. I take the case off of the screen and the sounds stops, so i unhook the lcd inverter and then hook everything back up and it is not making the sound anymore (kind of sounded like a high pressure bulb??) The screen stayed on ALL day long and I ran screen savers and various things to make sure that it would stay on.

Well now she gets it home and tells me that when her husband is playing warcraft the screen goes off after about 5 minutes. But it only happens to the game screen, they can still use the computer in every other way, its ONLY warcraft that is doing this. She spent some time with warcraft people on the phone and they said it might not be the same quality of monitor than the one that is in there, however, all of the specs, resolution, etc are the same.

Could this be a problem with the lcd inverter that would only happen with this game or could the monitor really not be up to spec?

Pc is HP PAVILION G61-429WM
Screen i installed: WXGA HD, 1366x768, 16:10 widescreen.

First off, she dropped and broke the screen, so it was the right thing to do to replace it.



EDIT: Is this the problem you're having?

-In some cases you might hear a buzzing noise coming from the area where the inverter board is located, it’s on the bottom part of the display assembly.

So ONLY when Warcraft is played the whole screen turns off? Does this occur with other games?
Could try new graphics drivers


To rule out a bad IGP/GPU you could have her run the laptop on an external monitor and see if the same
symptoms occur. If they were to, then I'd suspect the IGP/GPU.





That model laptop is cheap and runs dam hot

He was told to reinstall the game becuase sometimes people have that error. Well apparently it takes 30 hours to install warcraft?? I dont know but she claims it takes that long. Anyhoo, they reinstalled the game and it still has the same issues. I will try to get her to plug it into another monitor, if she has one.

I'm wondering if there a mismatch on the screen and inverter, just a guess? Did you order the screen off the part number of the old one?

If it takes 30 hours to install anything then you might wanna check
the hard drive for bad sectors and what not



If possible, before buying a screen, disassemble the laptop and order the new screen based on the make and model
shown on the back of the screen. Only do this if the customer deposits $ for the part and/or they let you
keep the laptop until the work is complete (collateral).

I would suggest comparing the make and model of the new screen to the old screen if you still have access to it

I didnt order the screen from a part number no, but I did order it from the same guy I get all of my screens from and have never seen an issue like this before.

Also if it was an inverter mismatch wouldnt it happen on everything not just one game?

It doesn't make sense that 1 game would cause issues with the inverter.

If you got the correct screen then their should be no mismatch. The inverter board is designed to work with the screen you got.
It's purpose is to power the backlight and I believe it increases the voltage to do so.

So how can running a game cause the backlight to shut off?




The article I sent you says that if you're hearing buzzing sounds then the
inverter board is probably bad.


btw, who do you buy screens from?

I get screens from a user on ebay called laptopz-outlet or screenaid...those are the two sellers I like to buy from..good customer service, and also they are on the east coast so i get items within 2 or 3 days

Also about the inverter board. It is not making that sound anymore, I am thinking it could have just been a loose connection or something because it works just fine now, no buzzing after i reconnected everything..

I'm using laptop-z too and the customer services is kinda poopy.
(btw, it's a company; not a user)

They sent me a screen with scratches and is also the wrong model.

They asked me to send pictures of the scratches, which doesn't show up on my camera, and I told them it doesn't even matter because I got the wrong model.


Here's their email from this morning:

We see the question,and we will send the return label to you,then you can return the item for the refund or the replacement and do not need to pay the shipping fee,you just need to print it,is that ok?

But we need your help,would you pls try to install the item to see if it can install,then we can resend you another new item without any worries.

By the way,pls tell us the model # of the original screen and ours which is at the back of the screen,such as LTN141P4-L01.

^^ I told them 2 times already what model I ordered and which model I received.
Also, they're using text talk (pls), which is not good customer service IMO.
A lot of times they have poor grammar and spelling, which makes me think they
probably have non-native English speaking employees :/

They want me to try and install the monitor, but don't give a reason why. It doesn't matter if it can be installed
because the screen is littered with scratches and is not the model I ordered





I will only buy from them again if they don't screw me over with this bad screen.
If they exchange the screen for the model I ordered originally and it's in mint condition
and I don't have this problem often then I will continue to buy from them.

The screen received has two tabs located at the top in
the middle that are used to screw the screen to the
bezel. This is not something that MY screen has.
Otherwise, the screen would install just fine.

I have the wrong model and it is littered with scratches.


PLEASE - Send me the return label so that I can EXCHANGE
the screen I received with a NEW AU OPTRONICS B154EW08
V.1 with absolutely NO scratches or any other kind of
cosmetic damage.

It's possible; without looking at the machine myself, I can't really be a good judge, but the Inverter is an easy thing to replace, so if the buzzing was coming from the inverter, that would probably be one of these first things I would try.

Stress it with freeware benchmarks? Maybe Sandra 2011 Lite ?

If it was overheating than the whole system would shut down
to protect itself from damage...

Not every system has temperature monitors and power cut-off. This is typical with processors, but not with an inverter. Some may have it, but if the connection to the inverter is more than a few pins, then it's highly unlikely that the inverter reports temperature to the system.

I can't imagine that the inverter board would overheat??? lol

Not necessarily overheating, but it's possible that a component on the inverter is damaged and fails under higher heat than normal, like extra heat generated when playing Warcraft. The temperature may be acceptable for the motherboard and processor to operate, but not the inverter with a failing component. This is of course, all theoretical, as I haven't seen the issue myself.

I would think that the inverter's temps. stay the same no matter what.

The purpose of the inverter board is to power the backlight (and it increases the
voltage?)... so if it's set to, for example, full brightness, it's gonna have the
same amount of voltage pumping to the bulb regardless of what's being
processed by the system. Whether it's surfing the Internet or playing a
cpu/gpu intensive video game.
