Laptop screen issue

I have this laptop a customer gave to me in exchange for removing a virus from a desktop computer.

Its a little on the older side, maybe 3-4 yrs old. Here is the issue: Whenever I boot it up the screen is just gray, immediately, nothing on the screen at all except gray, i mean every pixel is gray.

So I hooked it up to an external monitor and everything looks great.. There are no cracks or anything on this screen, it doesnt look like it has been dropped before, so I am not sure what it is

Is this an issue with an lcd inverter possibly?

I would guess it was either the LCD inverter or one of the cables.

+1 it is the screen and not the inverter.

from my experience from standalone LCDs, when the inverter goes out the screen is just black, no backlight. Only repaired one.

Ok thanks for the tips, I am going to try to get another cable and see if that works before I invest in a screen.
