Right so, I've recently asked myself how can I lan with my friend who lives about 110 meters away from my house. Now it is a small town, no WUGs and stuff like that. We also pay for our internet here by the gig because there is no ADSL, it's all technical and full of explanations. If you really want to know, I'll type it up.

With the limitations said, How can this be done? What sort of equipment will we need for this? Will it expensive?

You can do it easily. Need to buy outdoor, Wireless access points that support bridging & directional yagi antennas.

I wait until late at night and tie my cat5 cable to my dogs collar and have my neighbor call him over with bacon. Fortunately there is a two foot culvert running under the street for the dog to pass through so I don't have to worry about the street. Every morning I have my neighbor disconnect my cable, from his neighbors DSL and retract it.

CAT5 is only good for 100 Meters

Yup its 300ft or 100m (or thereabouts)

If you want to be real cheap about it, build a biquad antenna.
Its a nice little project for an afternoon and works well. Parts are pretty cheap too compared to what you would pay for a commercial antenna. Not suitable for a customer but its a nifty project.

What are the outdoor ranges of access points again? My A+ textbooks are locked away somewhere..

Depends on your antenna. Theoretically you can go miles. Me and a friend bridged a network once from two blocks away with two DDWRT mod linksys routers and home made cantennas with line of sight. Right now I can go outside and use my phone to get a reading on an access point a local ISP uses that's on top of a hill over 10 miles away. As long as you have line of sight you can go a long way. I think that's what people don't understand about wireless networks. Just because you can get a signal at the street does not mean someone with a high gain antenna can't.

Wireless is the real answer unless you are going to pay someone to lay Corning 50/125 fiber. :D
