Just had to check my signage!!

Wait what? You had someone come in and want you to set his watch? Are you a jeweler on the side? Did he want you to tie his shoes for him too? I just never can stop being amazed at stuff like this.
I've had customers ask me to setup their Smart TV, not just on the network but actually show them how to use it!
No problem, $99 per hour or part thereof!

Believe me, I was as dumbfounded as you are.

You mean to tell me that you don't know everything!
You must not be like the rest of those "computer guys".
LOL.
Well, of course I do know everything. I just pretend not to sometimes to get out of setting watches.

Seriously, I once had an old lady call me to her house to program numbers into her phone, a 10 minute job that took 45 minutes because her life had been long and so was the story of it, a story, I might add, that included a tale of how she had never been sexually promiscuous and so she didn't sleep with some guy she had been seeing when the Earth had barely cooled. When it was all done I made $5. That's what she offered me and I'm a sucker for old ladies, so that's what I made to close my shop (a one man show here) for nearly an hour to program numbers into a phone and listen to things I can never un-hear.

And that was the last time you didn't tell someone your hourly rate during the initial call.... right? RIGHT?
No. Like I said, I'm a sucker for old ladies. I had a daughter buy her mom a computer once and when I installed it she was crying because she was scared of it. That lead to years of free on-site calls. She called, I dropped everything. She's gone now. But you know what? I'd still rather be doing free on-site work for her. I loved that lady.

I'll forward all my old ladies to you then :)

Good on you though. But I certainly don't have the kind of business that could survive much of that. I wonder if you could find a way to write it off as a charitable donation.

Ah, it doesn't happen much. A few times a year. There are only certain older ladies who "get to me" and currently none of those who have are still around, sadly.

I had someone rang me this morning, queried about retrieved deleted messages off a Samsung phone. Told them I dont know how, dont want to get involved. I didnt say the last bit but was my gut feeling was a relationship trust issue.

Not exactly the same but once had an oldish woman come into the shop and wanted help setting up a tablet (can't remember exactly what it was now) She said such and such has reccomended you (can't remember who that was either now, but THANKS for this)
I sat in the front of the shop and helped her for about an hour, afterwards she asked do I owe you anything for that, I said £45 please (our hourly rate in shop) her face dropped and she started getting upset saying she didn't have that much, I said no worries how much do you have, she says £10 (I think oh ffs) I said just drop it in when you do have it then (basicly GTFO and stop wasting my time you've had enough of it for free already), she then starts crying saying how can I afford it I don't get much money from my benefits, wasted another bloody 20 minutes calming her down and actually accepting the £10 and promising her (about 20 times) that the £10 would be ok and she didn't owe me anything else.
