As title says, I have done work for geek squad as an employee and work for an ISP now but just completed my first side business repair. Wasnt bad, actually was fully done via remote for a guildie from World of Warcraft. She originally had firefox crashing and had the mycleanpc quoting her $300 to fix it which turned out to be mostly registry errors. Used Teamviewer to remote in ran some registry cleaning programs/malwarebytes and disabled some of her 99 services she has running on Windows Vista but running much smoother now and after removing 4 different toolbars from firefox, its no longer crashing. :D

Hi xparasite first off glad to hear you first repair job went well. as for the second you worked for geeksquad that's horrible why would you work for them its not like you can gain to much experience fixing computers with 99% of their so called fixing is telling the customer their computer is fried buy another and also its practically all automated. I just hope you don't treat your customers the way geeksquad did and don't advertise to much on here that you worked for them.

Not defending GeekSquad, but who the hell are you to judge a guy/girl and his/her previous line of work? If it comes down to having no experience or some experience with GS before going it on your own, any experience, even a bad experience and what you learned from it, is still experience. When it comes down to it, I have a lot more respect for someone who at least took any experience (even GS) before going it on their own, rather than some kid who worked on some families/friends machines and then decided they're ready to take on paying customers. There is a lot more to this business than just fixing machines. It's exposure to dealing with many different kinds of customers of all different levels of computer literacy, in all different kinds of situations with a variety of issues and how you interact and approach these clients and problems that's important. Can't say GS isn't a good platform for that kind of experience if nothing else.

AGREED. Absolutely Agreed.
There's way too much arrogance around here...

Hey anonymous Mac Tech first of all who the hell are you to talk to me that way. I was not being serious I was just kidding with him/her and I was going to let him/her know that after he/she posted. Why is it that the people on here are so uptight. Im not going to list all the experience or customer base I have gained in 8 years. yeah I started out fixing computers for friends / family but my reputation with new york life / nationwide / etc. speaks for its self. anyways it was a joke ha ha don't get your Panties in a bunch

@xparasite
I would advise that you don't let GS get wind that you are fixing PCs on your own, you will likely get yourself fired if they find out. The same may go for your ISP job as well if they also provide PC repair services.

I just started using TeamViewer. It seams like a nice tool. So far I'm just using it to troubleshoot my Mother's PC, that will go to a black screen for her, but will run solid for more than a week for me, granted I don't really use it like she does while I have it. So far in all my years of working on PCs, this is the first that I haven't been able to diagnose.... yet;).

You were kidding? Sure as hell didn't look like it and nobody else caught on either. In case you didn't notice the smilies;) immediately to the right when you post a reply, yeah we usually throw one of those in to make at least hint at a joke. You basically inserted your foot in your mouth and are obviously trying to back-peddle with this response. Walk on home.

You know why they are so uptight? It because this is NOT a casual forum for dicking off and being snide. This is a forum to support other techs in a serious and deliberate manner. There is a time and place for a joke here and there, but your overall presentation in this thread is poor.

Your attitude is not conducive to supporting, and ultimately learning anything by being a contributor. The second you have to defend your experience and qualifications because YOU wrote something inappropriate, you have lost respect overall. I would hope you can reflect and change the way you come across, but that isn't up to anyone but you.

team view can black out the client's screen while you work, did you use that feature?
agreed on the other person's comment about side repairs. You don't want best buy to find out that you are doing stuff on the side

It looks like he's not working for them anymore.

As for the squabble, I worked for Geek Squad and CompUSA. It was great first exposure. The problem isn't the employees, it's the management. I worked with some smart talented people, but in a lot of situations, our abilities were hampered by policy. That doesn't mean we didn't learn and improve in situations that permitted it. If you want to joke when you try and insult someone, use the smiles to indicate so. I also didn't see it as a joke; it's not easy to discern tone from an internet post.

Heh. Why wouldn't you defend Geek Squad, at least in part? We put down so called "Pizza techs", in part because they cheapen our business image and depress pricing. Seems to me that Geek Squad is trying to do the opposite in those areas.
