I guess a lot has to do with the EU's and the environment. I used to do a lot of this when I was doing support work for the DCAA. Not moving from a WG to AD but from a old machine to a new machine on AD. At first I used to do this manually but many users were complaining "I used to have...). I agree with @YeOldeStonecat about doing the basics to try to eliminate the detritus. But the complaints is not something I could ignore since I was not running the show and setting expectations.
I found a USMT roll that did the trick. Worked very well to keep the user experience as intact as possible. But a year or so later they made some changes to GP which broke using USMT. In my case, being a DoD site, I could not bring in an unapproved third party app. So it went back to the manual process, putting up with the complaints, and letting management know why.
Today I'd use the Profile Wizard without a second thought in the M$ ecosystem.
