Hi

I visited a customer with an iPad issue yesterday. It's and iPad mini 2 16 Gig running iOS 9.3.5

The ipad was showing low memory only 640 megabytes available. Checked storage & iCloud usage and mail was showing 8 Gigabytes of storage. I deleted the single email account from mail and then rebooted. On reboot mail was still showing as full with 8 Gigabyes of data.

Not much else on the device a few photos and one 10 minute video. The customer was desperate to save the video so I attempted to transfer the photos and video via her MacBook using iTunes and photos. No joy the iPad is detected but will not talk to the Mac. I try the same with my windows laptop and although the iPad is detected in file manager and you can see it as an external device you cannot see anything in the DCIM folder. To be sure it was not a cable issue I tested with my own iPad Air and iPhone 7 everything works as it should on her MacBook and my computer!!

Tried airdopping from her mini to my iPad and iPhone no joy would not work at all

My only option is to reset the mini and delete everything however the customer is desperate for the video as it was from an important once only event!!

Has anyone used another software application that might enable me to retrieve the video and photos from the device. Or has anyone resolved a similar scenario.

I will be visiting the customer again at the end of next week.

Many thanks

Jason

On your windows PC did you see if your iTunes could see it? If i'm not mistaken, you can't use windows' Explorer to open the ipad and view files like you can with android devices. Basically everything needs to be done through iTunes/third party apps. So if the iPad is seen in iTunes on your PC, you can make a backup of the iPad, use third party software to extract any desired data from the backup file, reset the iPad, then resync the data she wants kept.

Hello Mark, Sorry I should have been a bit clearer the ipad is detected on the macbook but will not sync with iTunes and although photos detects the ipad you cannot see the photos or video it is just blank.

On Windows 10 it again is detected with iTunes but will not sync. You can see the device in file manager and access the DCIM folder but it shows as empty even though the photos and video are visible on the iPad. As I explained everything worked as it should with my test ipad and iphone on both her and my devices.

I was not able to spend as much time as I normally would as the customer was in a hurry to go away with the iPad so I have left it as is and they can use it for basic email and facetime and then I can look again when they get back

Thanks for the link to the software, i will download and test this ahead of my customer visit.

I have just remembered that I used this software http://www.copytrans.net/ a few years back to recover a load of music from an iPod

I have to be honest I don't really get that many problems with iPads or iPhones so I don't have an alternative software to talk to them in my toolkit normally. I will now!!

Cheers

Jason

Hi internet connection at customers house not very good as they are in a very rural location. I could attempt this if I bring the iPad to my house where the internet is better.

Theres no ftp server software for ipad? when I have problems retrieving stuff on an android device I install an ftp server app and ftp to it.

That's not the issue. The big problem with iOS is the devices do not have a browsable file system like we are used to seeing. Apple's developer spec require that each app be sandboxed so to speak. So one cannot have a FTP server mount up just any old directory.

I use iFunbox - it has a Explorer/Finder style window that lets you browse the file system on your Apple devices:

Does the iOS device have to be jail broken? The website mentions cracking apps and jail breaking If yes then this is not an option for me or my customer. I don't bother with jail breaking too much hassle when customers forget and upgrade their IOS version and then wonder why the jailbreak is broken.

That's one of many apps, like the Easeus one, that run on a regular computer to access an iOS device. I've also used iExplorer but it's not free. If this data is valuable to the customer I'd not try the jail break method as some may nuke the device.

No, I have used iFunBox on unmodified iPhones & iPads with great success. And it is free last time I checked. YMMV.
