I have machine that has been infected, its Win7 64bit SP1 fully updated.

For example if I go to Mozilla website to download Firefox, once I click to download nothing happens.

If I click direct link to download nothing happens as well.

I tried to revert to IE10, no help.

I tried RESET and Restore Advanced settings with no success.

Other browsers are able to download.

Security zones are all reset to default as well.

Its running AVIRA Professional, I disabled all protection modules, however, no help.

IE addons: Microsoft Silverlight, Java, BING.

Any idea?

There are several variations of this problem.

1) Files download but show as infected or not completed
2) Files offer to download with names and sizes but when you click on run or save the clickable area might highlight or indicate its clicked but do nothing
3) Clicking on a download link does nothing at all.

The first one tends to be a defender issue. The others can be anything from activex issues, broken AV wrappers, UAC issues, damaged IE files, broken entries in the registry, etc.

I had one the other day which only worked if I turned off UAC, rebooted and then the downloads worked ok. Everything else (sfc, registry fixes, resetting or up/downgrading IE, activex/security settings, etc) had no improvement on it.

I think that we are seeing a combination of virus damage and A/V wrappers or IE/security settings getting corrupted but its different each time.

Have you tried downloading IE to another system and transfering that over for now?

Can you download from any other site?

I've also seen this caused by the remnants of adware/browser hijackers left on the PC after an infection. I use a program called 'spyhunter' to get rid of them...it'll surprise you with what's left over. You can run a scan for free (I do this and then manually clean up) but I have also sold a few licenses on machines that I feel stand a good chance of getting re-infected.
