Let me start off by saying i've owned the following:

Nexus7
Nexus10
Galaxy tab 7
iPAd mini (wifes)

I'm looking for something with a clean crisp screen high reso, expandable storage, usb/micro usb port, front and rear facing camera (for use with PCRT)
and under $500

Give the Microsoft surface a try.

I needed a laptop but love my tablet, so I just got a Lenovo Twist. It arrived today so I have not had a chance to really test it yet.

Checkout the Asus Transformer TF700T with micro SD and HDMI out $429 at Newegg. It has an optional docking / keyboard with an extra USB port and SD card reader that will push you over your $500 budget but is well worth it. The keyboard also gives you another 4.5 hours of battery life.

Second this. Asus transformer is a sweet tablet. I don't think you can get what you want under $500.

The transformer from asus is awesome! I love mine. Also got the dock which turns it into a netbook, sort of. Definitely worth checking out, amazon has some great deals on the tab and dock, should come pretty close to your $500 mark.

Samsung ATIV, got one for the wife and she loves it. They only issue she has is you have to make sure the tablet and the dock are together, there is no locking system to keep it together so sometimes it comes loose. Now this is only if you use the dock. She uses it as a tablet 80% of the time.

To give windows 8 a fair chance you must try it with a touch screen computer.

Its a 11.6 screen, full windows 8, usb port on tablet itself 2 more on dock can charge on or off the dock, mini hdmi, micro sd slot

Is there a way to tether an Android based tablet to an Android phone as easily as Blackberry does with the Playbook? I know that you can enable WiFi Hotspot on your phone, but it is a pain to have to enable/disable every time you want to do it.

I'm not familiar with Blackberry. What does it do? What are you trying to emulate?

Personally, I recommend the Toshiba Thrive 10.1. It is a hardy tablet (I have dropped it many times, and it survived!), A pretty fast one too! It has front and rear facing cameras, A full size SD Card Slot, A Full Size HDMI, A Full Size USB and a mini USB port. It has a back cover similar to an otterbox cover, and it is removable so you can access the battery and change to a different colored one. It is available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB Versions (all WiFi). It can be found on eBay (and possibly Amazon) for under $300. It Works for me!

P.S. I would stay away from the Android 4.0 Upgrade though, I think it was rushed out too early.

There are some tethering apps in the play store. I think they only work over wifi though not 3/4G

If your phone is rooted you can download "wifi tether for root" and "Foxfi" if it's not rooted.

Both work great. You just put a widget on your screen to toggle it on or off when you need it.

If your carrier had it removed from the play store, goto Foxfire.com to get it.

Any thoughts to share about the MS Surface Pro? I've also been thinking of a tablet, but like the idea of a functional laptop replacement.

love the asus line!! battery life ROCKS and running 4.2 is fantastic!

The dock is great too! start with 64GB add a 64GB Micro chip then with the dock you can add another 128GB via SD and an externall HDD/FD via full size USB.
Barcode scanner works great as well! Bluetooth printers too
