Hurricane Irma--I'm in the cone, darn it!

I consider myself very blessed to have gotten through this. No damage to my home except a gate that broke off a little but already had zip tied. I put it right back up and once I got to Home Depot this weekend we should be fine.

I was without power from Sunday 10:30am to just about an hour ago. The only misfortune was that the food went bad from Sunday morning to Monday night so I dumped anything dairy and such. I cooked as much food leading up the hurricane and after as I could.

I am still without internet but that should be coming up soon. The amount of trees that fell were nuts. The big rooted trees that I thought woudl take alot more were uprooted with the 80 mph winds.

Glad you made it, man! Been watching the drama unfold on the TV. Hard to believe the destruction.
Irma and Harvey were reminiscent of Tropical Cyclone "Tasha" that hit Australia in 2011 that affected a huge area of Queensland, "the size of Texas and France combined." that led to the devastating floods.
Nature's incredible fury at it's worst!

Yeah it is surreal, we were more prepared for this than before. I think by the begining or middle of next week we will be back up and running with no problems. The power and cable companies are doing their best to restore light to streets and also get internet back.

I'm curious to know if @YeOldeStonecat bought on Anna Maria Island, and if he didn't, if he still plans to do so. :)

Have not purchased yet.....
Going down there in a few weeks...AMI came out rather unscathed!

...still plan on buying down there...yup!. Although...may insist on a raised (on stilts) cottage.

I feel SOOOO bad for people down in The Keys...wow. Just heart wrenching! Less than 10% of the homes there made it undamaged. The Keys will never bee the same again. The "old Florida" homes are now destroyed. And the working class that lived there..most will not be able to afford rebuilding. So it'll be big development investors..condos...sky rises...those will be most of what gets built out in the Keys again. Cute little quirky cottages...no more, those people will have left.

Some low areas of Naples got hit pretty hard too...lot of homes went under water in low areas. My brother in law just bought a place down there this past spring..he came out OK though, was about 12 miles inland...stayed dry. Another bud that bought a place in Punta Gorda last winter...his townhouse came out OK.

Another good friend of mine that just moved down to Englewood this past spring...surprisingly her house came out pretty well. She's close to the water...just inside of Manasota Key...I was worried about her house when we saw the hurricane slipping up past Ft Myers. She came out OK though. No power for a while longer..but came out fine.

My wife's mom lives in Boyton Beach....she's not back home yet, she fled up north to stay at a friends..probably be home early next week. @cypress you know where she lives...Indian Spring Country Club...how did that area make out?

Time to invest in a mountin cabin home with a view. Inland around a good lake that does not rise much.

Yeah I wouldn't mind one of those up in New Hampshire...love it up in the White Mountains up there. Have a little place for a summer cottage. And then the colder 2/3 of the year hang in Florida.

I've lived on the coastline for my entire life...been through many hurricanes (although nothing like what hit the Keys and south west Florida like Naples). But yeah..I love the ocean, love the salt water, love the beach, love the heat...it's a trade off.

Have a fully concreate building created on those formentiond stilts and put siding and super storm shutters on the reinforced windows and hopefully the worst that can happen is you replace siding and roof shingles and possibly the outdoor AC unit after a bad storm.

Yeah I sure do and I passed by it recently. Power is restored in that area as far as I know. No real damage just fallen trees that have been pretty much been picked up. In our area it was more about wind than any water. We were very fortunate.
