That's how I look when reading text messages (or email) where LOL is being used as a trope to pretend what's just been clearly implied "is just a joke" when you know damned well it is not.

For real jokes or funny anecdotes, it's generally not necessary.

And I don't disagree, it's just one of those, "I don't know whether to laugh, or cry," kinds of funny for me.

In our current moment overall, I just keep recalling these words, to give me strength:

Substitute, or expand upon, the word "people" ahead of "die" as you feel appropriate for our current moment.
