Actually, in certain situations (mostly office) this makes complete sense. I know I've often wanted to "look something up" on my smartphone while having a conversation, and though you can do that, you have to go to speaker, go back to the home screen, etc., etc., etc.

At my desk, I would prefer an actual receiver (even with wire) and this over the juggling.

But, it is another example of "everything old is new again." Certain ubiquitous design idioms with regard to communication devices weren't the result of lack of other options, but because they worked so well where needed. Tool to task.
