HP released firmware updates for a number of its Serial-Attached SCSI solid-state drives to prevent their failure at exactly 32,768 hours of operation time.

The devices are used in multiple server and storage products for enterprise, such as HPE ProLiant, Synergy, Apollo, JBOD D3xxx, D6xxx, D8xxx, MSA, StoreVirtual 4335 and StoreVirtual 3200.

The abnormal expiration time translates to 3 years, 270 days and 8 hours, a lot less than the normal lifespan of these products. For some of them, the warranty can be extended to up to five years.

1024 x 32 = 32,768. That can't be an accident. Some developer made a rookie mistake somewhere. Gotta love this stuff, especially when it effects OEM parts for which you pay an exorbitant premium, no less. Ask the vendor why their parts are so expensive and they'll give you a 10-minute diatribe on global infrastructure, supply chain management & multiple-layer compatibility testing. Uh huh. That sounds about right.

Luckily regular driver and firmware updates are part of our maintenance program for our clients servers. This issue..already fixed in a firmware update. So..it's no longer an issue!

And what's nice about having a tier-1 server...all components from top to bottom are managed and supported by that vendor. So you're aware of those issues, and updates are sent out to correct it. Versus trying to track issues across 88 different brand components from various "motherboard of the month club" brands for home built cloners.

And this just points up, again, why doing updates is not optional.

Stuff like this happens, and gets fixed, and if you assiduously apply the updates as they are released you avoid far more problems than the occasional problematic update causes (and even those get fixed, too, and generally really promptly).
