EDIT: SOLVED - CPU was also fried, and yes, HDMI out should work at post

So I have a customer that bought the most expensive cup of coffee ever.. I told him that I don't like to do liquid damage anymore because it has a habit of frying out everything. He said he doesn't care how much it costs, he wants to fix it..

So I opened it up, coffee hit everything.. clearly shorted lots on the motherboard and keyboard, everything else that had coffee on it didn't look damaged..

CPU was covered by heatsink so no direct coffee damage. RAM didn't get any coffee on it.. Both hard drives had a little coffee, but just on the labels, not by the connectors.. USB board and card reader board both had a little coffee, as well as the connecting cables, again it looked like there was no actual damage. Same with the CD rom..

Ordered a replacement motherboard and keyboard, cleaned the hell out of everything else with alcohol and a brush. Reassembled everything, I'm getting no video.. The computer powers on, LEDs and fans come on, stays on for about 10 seconds, and restarts. Tried different ram, reseating all cables, minimal assembly(just dc jack and lcd cable(and then lcd cable plus the "3d cable" that goes to the monitor).. Same result.

If the battery is plugged in, the dc jack led is amber, if the battery isn't plugged in, it blinks white.. I think this is normal for this laptop..

I tried external video, but this laptop only has HDMI, no VGA.. I've never had a video issue on a laptop without VGA, so I don't know if you get HDMI out during post. HDMI gave me nothing even pressing the function button, and restarting it with HDMI plugged in.

The motherboard was direct from HP, and we tried RAM, so I'm thinking its either the CPU, LCD cable, or the LCD. I don't have a test cable, I have a test LED screen, but I'm not sure how this cable will react with a random screen, given it has a 3d cable too. (and I haven't opened up the top half to even look at the connectors to see if its the same). No test CPUs either..

So quick version -

1)Do CPUs fry with water damage commonly?
2)Is HDMI supposed to give external video during post?

I'm gonna open up the screen and see what my test LED does, but wondering if you guys had any other ideas...

aaaaand after bloody fingers from stupid clips and too much glue holding a laptop together, its not the same LED connector as 99% of LED laptops.. It looks like a big LCD connector, but there's no inverter or ccfl plug..

So we're still at LCD, LCD cable, or CPU, and no way of testing any of them.. Its a good thing were not already 500 dollars into this with parts and labor :D

I would like to know the answer to this question as well. Sorry for the lack of help.

No problem, sometimes technibble is a great sounding board just to bounce your own ideas around..

My coworker had a dell with HDMI out, I tried it and I got the dell splash screen.. So yes HDMI should work at post..

Then after some research, I figured out my toshiba had the same socket 2 CPU.. mine was an i3, the envy is an i7.. So I ripped mine all the way down to CPU, switched it in to the envy, and we got video..

So keyboard, motherboard, CPU... probably gonna be close to a grand with labor

Will they still pay if you cannot fix it ? I would find out if you can restock the mobo with HP and walk away.

You can't find parts for that thing anywhere but HP. Even the lcd is impossible to find. I think there is one guy on ebay stripping one but thats about it.

Glad you were able to diagnose the issue as a fried CPU. Regarding HDMI out during POST...thanks for the answer and I wonder if every manufacturer designs their machines differently or can HDMI out can be expected during POST across the board? I don't expect an answer...just wondering.

The HDMI standard supports the same video formats as DVI. If implemented properly I would expect it to perform in the same manner.

In my personal experiences every machine I've had hooked up to a display via HDMI has shown the post and BIOS screens.

See Wikipedia for more details.

I would have asked do you take SUGAR in your coffee? Or laptop with sugar? No matter is CPU had heatsink or not, I would have bet it was another component that got caramelised before the CPU did.
