Hey all

I have a client that has an HP 8020. The printer will continually print 3 lines from a previous document, then a blank page, then rinse repeat constantly. There is nothing in the print que (which I have reset for good measure) Computer rebooted, printer rebooted, printer RESET.. this behavior continues! I can print test pages in between the random prints, but it will simply not stop printing a piece of this one previously printed document.

Anyone have an suggestions on this?

Thanks!

It "sounds like" the old days, a bad in-printer buffer memory. But surely it must be a driver issue? I haven't seen that kind of problem since the 90's.

EDIT ADD:
The buffer memory problem in the old days could be where a row(s) of a memory chip doesn't write correctly.. so when the printer addresses that row as it buffers, it doesn't update. Upon the next job, it shifts the data or uses some other type of operation (Clear? Reset?) That actually causes the bad rows to write.. weird stuff can happen, unexpected results, etc... Could also be causing a literal buffer overflow..

Yeah.. uninstalled the printer drivers / software. Reinstalled. It continues. Reset the printer to factory settings via the web menu.. random printing continues. I am stumped.

Onle two things left to do...

Print a report directly from the printer UI and see if the issue persists. If yes replace. If no proceed to next step.
Install printer on another station, like your laptop while onsite. If yes replace. If no, probably replace anyways.

Or just skip all that and replace it.

While I really hate tossing things and will work on repairs I don't waste my time on anything that you can't get reliable spare parts. And you'll never find those for printers under $500. Generally speaking. While a rare problem it's almost certainly something along the lines of what @phaZed said.
