how to? Server 2012 std, needs to have multiple RDP's at the same time

I believe you will need to operate in a domain enviroment. I've never set up RDS in a workgroup! It might be possible and I'm guessing your probably be one of the few to try.

My advice would be to name the domain workgroup to get round the business owner's stupid decision :)

I was thinking the same thing. Now I know it is not advisable to run a TS/RDC server and a DC on the same box, but if it is possible on 2012, it may be the easiest way to get this done.

SAG, reading through it now. Not sure if I can just run the power shell scripts that they mention to get this done or not..?

I can't comment about this particular situation. But the last time I stepped out of the M$ "box" it was a painful, time consuming situation that ended up not working. In this case it was a customer who had already bought a replacement server that was 2008 SBS. Don't remember the specifics but the end result was to demote the server from DC/AD to workgroup mode. While I found a bunch of scripts, steps, etc the process took over 20 hours to complete and yielded a broken OS.

To be honest, I just skimmed through that post earlier before linking it here.
After looking at it, it just seems to be a bit of copypasta to get it going and is pretty straight forward.

Mark is right though, trying to step outside of their box can put you in a hurt locker sometimes.
But what's a man to do?

Check event viewer logs....services, application, system....see what is failing and why.
I have not setup a terminal server in a workgroup setup before....I've only had them as member server in active directory. I have done some Google-Fu and I see that you can do it...found a thread in a Microsoft forum and a Microsoft employee of the terminal server team answered that it could, and saw other posts where people did set it up in workgroup mode. So it's possible....I just don't see why it's failing on yours. Double check that licensing...I did read when you do workgroup mode it has to be "per device" licensing. I'm guessing the "per user" licensing can only check domain user accounts..and without AD (such as in a workgroup mode) logically it cannot do that.

I dug through the system event logs and didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

I found this KB guide, not 100% sure if it applies here, but I haven't had a chance to actually walk through this on the server in question yet.
Guidelines for installing the Remote Desktop Session Host role service on a computer running Windows Server 2012 without the Remote Desktop Connection Broker role service

However, if this doesn't work, I'm getting the point of giving up and going with a dual server HyperV environment on this one box. One as the DC w/AD and the other with the RDS setup. This will be a first for me in 2012, and while I'm sure I can get it done, if you have any tips or great walk-throughs you can point me to, that would be helpful.

Also, If I do go the hyperv route, I wont be joining the client computers to the domain. Will this be a problem for user accounts between the client computer and the server/AD?

Oh, and what do i do about the licensing for the RDS CAL? Its been activated already. Do I need to deactivate it?

Interesting....thanks for posting the solution you've found. Seems with 2012 they're making it more difficult to go outside their best practice.....like Mark said above..to "go outside the MS box".
