I confess that I did crack a piece of software many many years ago.
Back in the late 90's when music CD's were very expensive ($34 for a popular CD) I used a program called CloneCD to copy them so that I could keep the originals in pristine condition and use the copies for daily use.
I never gave it a second thought till later that someone actually spent time developing this software (although it was frowned upon by the record companies of course).
I did eventually pay the license fee (about $25 IIRC?)
It wasn't long after that, that music was being delivered on DVD which was much harder to copy.
Sony had invented the CD/DVD burner and developed the format along with Toshiba and Philips for copying CD/DVD's then had to backpedal and try to prevent them being used for that reason.
