How much are you guys getting your ...

I've seen that site before but I never quite understood what it meant by branded. What I figured it meant was that only the computer it was installed on, was the only computer it could ever be installed on, ever.

Unlike the regular OEM copies everyone else seems to sell like newegg for example. Those oem copies can be put on any computer as long as the license is removed from one PC first.

No all OEM is like that. Branded means it will have one of the major OEMs brands on it. This is unsold surplus from Dell, Hp, or someother Tier 1 vendor. It's gray market stuff that I personally wouldn't touch.

Yup. I emailed their customer service and asked them about "branded." Here's their exact, if somewhat garbled, response:

"Branded would state on the site "Please note the media may say Dell or HP but will install on any brand of computer". That is what branded means:)"

Thats what I remember. Thats why I never touched it. Thanks for the reminder :)

Ok so what about you guys, where do you get your copies of Windows from?

I'm pretty sure that the site TechLady recommended is breaking MS's TOS by reselling the OEM COA's that are branded. They are tied to the system on which they were sold. I've never heard where it was legal to resell any branded OEM certificate.

Newegg. I don't think you can find a LEGIT license for Win 7 for under what Newegg sells them for. I've looked in the past and was not able.

Yea. It's sad that newegg sells them for cheaper than any vendor that sells to a business. Really sucks because my prices are easily beat by newegg as newegg sets 90% of the market place from what I've seen. Or am I just completely wrong?

IIRC installing OEM makes you the client's support contact and you can only install it if you are granted OEM status by MS.

Retail would be fair game for anyone to install on any machine despite the original brand and gets their support directly from MS.

What sucks around here is we have a couple local hobos running shops out their house selling vlk copies of windows to anyone at new egg prices. One guy doesn't even pronounce windows right he is so backwoods. Winders.

I was only having this discussion with one of my techs today. It happens alot round here too. It probably gets to me more that it should , but its really one thing that pi$$es me off.

We had a PC in today which had a COA on the side and some douchebag pizza tech had loaded a VLK copy of XP on. The customer brings it to us after it got flagged non gen wondering why as they had a legit key on the side of their PC.

Weird, I always find newegg to be too steep compared to local vendors. I have a distributor that sells W7 H.P. 64bit for 89.00 + tax, newegg is 99+shipping!
