How did you name your business?

When I started out I called it HOB I T and pronounced it that way but when I got calls they called me Hobit as one word so I just went with it. It's easy to remember and they can Google it easily.

I wanted something unique. I fell in love with the name "Riverstone Technology". I live near a river, and it conjured up images of calm, smooth, flowing... Sadly, when I tried to register it, the name search turned up a trademark for " Riverstone Networks", and I couldn't use the name. I was so stuck on the name, I had trouble thinking of an alternative. Finally sick of me moping about, my wife asked, "Don't you have that personal domain name? Why not use that?"

She meant codegreen.ca. Originally, it was a blog I had years ago dedicated to me learning how to program. (I was green when it came to code. Get it? Hey?) "Code Green Technology" sounded good to me, so I ran with it.

My original business name started out as a joke during highschool with some friends and I discussing dangerous weapons. I bought the .COM domain name on a whim and used it as my personal site (still have it). I bought the .NET a couple years later to "protect" my domain name. Then I used it as my business name in 2004, since it was unique.

Problem was it was a bit too unique and I was always getting asked "what does your business name mean", "where'd you get the name" and people would also mispronounce it. After 6-7 yrs of not having a good answer to those questions, I finally smartened up (and started to take my business more seriously, not just doing break/fix residential work) and got a much better business name that reflects where I am located and what I do: Snow Pond Technology Group Inc. Group being a group of businesses I have (2 at the moment: IT consulting is my main business, and webhosting is my secondary business).

If there is any advice I can give to someone starting out, THINK DEEPLY ABOUT YOUR FUTURE BUSINESS NAME! Make sure it is succinct, easy to spell, easy to pronounce and easy to remember. I wish I had done that from the beginning.
