Hostgator has been down for the past 4 hours for me and most of my clients. Anyone else on Hostgator and having issues.

Recommendations on a new webhost?

Ya, just host, Bluehost, and like 20 others are all down.. Apparently all owned by the same company.. Freaking sucks.. I'm on JustHost and have only got access twice for check in this morning.. Been out for hours. Omg.

Yeah there Provo Utah data center is down. I used to be hosted in Dallas but they moved me a couple of weeks ago. Several of my clients are down too. Seriously sucks.

yep, mine is down too. I just switched to HostGator from iPage as I heard so many great things about them, and I really like the reseller package they offer.

So far it hasn't been that great! Intermittent slow loading pages and now she's just down completely.

Hopefully they get everything straightened out over there.

I have several domains with hostgator and having no problems. I am hosted out of their Virginia data center though. I have been with them for over 5 years and they have been fantastic. Only twice was there a brief downtime but it was in the middle of the night for no more than 20 minutes.

you monitoring with pingdom?

Well I am back up now. Was down about 4 hours but this is not been the first time. Service with Hostgator is been flawless for years but every since they moved me to the Utah data center I've had speed issues and delays on email.

I'm still down. Fortunately I don't have any client sites on HostGator yet! I will likely still move them over despite the outage.

I am hoping that whatever caused this problem was also the cause of the random extremely slow loading times that I would get for my site. So far HostGator has provided very good support, most of their chat techs are better than I would expect, and they have a good feature set.

Can't believe how long it has been down for though! It would be very interesting to learn what the root cause of the problem is and how they find/correct it.

Apparently it is due to some of their main switches:

Well, my website and PCRT on Justhost have been on for the last 45 minutes and man is my site and PCRT fast.... I was getting 0.4-0.6 load times in PCRT and now it's down to .12seconds, much faster than it has ever been. My site is loading a bit faster as well... hopefully this was all for the best! Hopefully it doesn't slow down when everyone figures out their site and services are back up ! :D

As I understand it installing new switches to improve performance is what started this. We've all been THERE. One of THOSE upgrades. Feces hitting rapid moving propeller blade.

After this latest outage, I changed my nameservers over to amazon route 53. Cost my a few extra bucks a year, but it allows my E-mail to keep working even if bluehost is having trouble. If your mail server is different from your web server (I.E. Office 365), this may be worth looking into.

I had a couple of clients call in and wanted to move to a new company. What's the point, every company has a serious "issue" now and then, even my company and my clients forgive me. I hate when people jump ship over one outage. If they have outages often, sure...but not a random. From my years of being techie, I don't recall such a huge outage outside of GoDaddy last year.

Not worth moving over in my opinion, not with clients with custom websites and what not.

Exactly. I've been with Justhost for the better part of 2 1/2 years and there has been the odd 30-45 minute outage but nothing like what happened yesterday... stuff happens. The real test is going to be if they identify and fix their weak spots, IMO if their network would have been setup correctly this should have never been allowed to happened. Traffic should have failed over to another switch or set of switches. Because this all occurred during a planned maintenance event I think someone messed up big somewhere.

Hostgator has done real good for me. And once you factor in the reseller package cost, I am hooked. Hard drives fail, routers fail, people make mistakes, but from my last 4 years with Hostgator, they seem to have a pretty good grip on it. I understand they are merging into the same data enter as BlueHost and slowly migrating away from Softlayer. Hope things continue to perform.

I live in a great city...I dont watch/read the news but because I have never actually seen a violent crime occur the city of columbia must be a great place to live and clearly gang free. (its not)

That is what you guys are doing when you don't specify if you are doing decent uptime monitoring or not.

Ok I guess this is going over my head humor wise. WTF are you talking about?

What im saying is unless you got an uptime monitor that monitors the actual uptime and preferebly response time of your site then your opinion on the quality of your hosting is worth dramatically less.

Edit: To give an example...

Person A is a blogger that posts on his website twice a day, hes never seen his site down so he assumes his hosting is fantastic.

Person B is on the same server and checks his site 10 times a day, hes never seen his site down so he assumes the hosting is fantastic.

Person C listens to PersonA+B and joins the same server but he uses livezilla for his live chat on his website that gets a few hundred visitors per day. He notices livezilla is constantly losing connection and after using a decent uptime monitor realizes that the hosting is in fact crap.
