High Dollar Inquiry from no where

I completely quit responding. He did email me again the next day but I ignored it. I'm not so sure it was a robot, I think it was targeted.. This is the first email I received

"My name is Bruce and i am inquiring if i could purchase laptop computers with below specification from your company, advise available brands models and pricing respectively.

4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor
Windows 8.1
8GB Memory 500GB Hard Drive

Bruce Stephenson
Tel: 717-447-3506"

I sent him an invoice via PayPal and noticed the name through PayPal associated with the email address was completely different. He replies "I'm not familiar with PayPal, but you can enter my card detail in it though"

PS. I use Best Regards all the time... :(

Same here. It's not a phrase that has survived much into the 21st Century in American culture.

Wow. I am not kidding, I have two unread emails in my inbox. The first one is the notification from Technibble from this post. The second one is a reply from a known-good non scammer human being in CT, USA.

This is the bottom of his reply:

Best regards,

Bill

This type of scam is very frequent. I advertise on Craigslist and get these emails constantly. I also get the emails that are from a "hearing impaired person." They are the same template every time.

I like to reply with a generic response to their generic scam:

"Dear Sir or Madam,

Please f*** off.

Warmest Regards,
Tyler"

Speak of the devil, just for an email:

Brad ,
Am calling to complete payment for the laptops, please call me back so i can complete the transaction.

Ask for the credit card info, including the name on the card. Then call your merchant services and give them the details along with the name and card info and have them do the footwork for you.

It's most definitely a scam, but if you can get the card info you may be helping someone else out by informing your merchant services of the card in question. They (should) contact he card holder and let them know it's compromised so Mr Stephenson can't use it on the next retailer.

So I get an email today to my personal business account (not easily available on website, only business cards) from a guy a few hundred miles from me looking for 10 business class laptops. I entertained it thinking that it wasn't going to lead to anything and now he wants to go ahead and place the order and give me credit card details (~$9K).

The guys grammar leaves little to be desired but it's certainly not any sort of robot. He hasn't answered my question pertaining to how he heard about us or my request for company name and address.... No way this is real, right?

In an attempt to protect myself I tried sending an invoice via PayPal but he says he'd prefer to give me CC details over the phone...

I have never done a transaction like this and am very skeptical and want to make damn sure i'm safe here.... Any help would be very much appreciated.
Do you even have to think about this?

I was 99% sure it was junk. The only reason I considered it to be anything is because of my email account it came in on. Its my personal business account which is only on my business cards.

I was also wondering what the ramifications were if I did accept the card. Not just for this circumstance but in general.

Admin: Guys, can you please refrain from swearing on the forums.

I have had 2 reports of profanities on this thread alone, and have removed the swear words.

Thanks.

Who are the lightweight techs on this forum that can't handle a bit of rough language? People are seriously reporting this sort of thing?

Seriously, you are that offended by a bit of swearing?

LOL!

(no, I am not actually asking for names).

I prefer to converse with adults who choose NOT to be offended by a few words. There are bigger issues than a few words.
