[SOLVED] help with an XP Pro system error after error :/

*It turns out the issue was caused by Nortons Antivirus 9 Corporate edition, check last post from me for details*

Hello again fellow computer nerds and nerdettes,

I come to you once again humble asking for some assistance,
The system:
Windows SP Pro SP3 Centoris laptop
1.4Ghz CPU 1GB ram etc
RAM & HDD scans show 0 errors (its in for bi annual checkups regularly)

Whats its doing:
It will boot into safemode happily, no errors
safemode with networking support will load, task manager sees the wifi & network adapters, but "networking" in the control panel doesnt
inserting a thumbdrive displays info in device manager and only through that can i access the "F:" drive that the system gives it, but still my computer shows only the HDD and optical (and E: for a memory reader port)

Normal boot (The fun stuff)
we get an error before the login screen:
a problem is preventing windows from checking license 0X80070002

checking that shows 2 main issues, registry entry regarding cryptography that needs removing (the reg entry pointed to me by microsoft doesnt exist)
the other is regarding the OEMBIOS.BIN files.

I have tried copying from another XP Pro system, no joy.

after clicking OK, i get another error:
Parser Message:
Value Creation failed

its in a box, no visible number (the box looks malformed, no close, no OK or continue , oddly shaped so im missing whatever error number.

but i can hit return/enter on that then get presented with the login windows, i click the username and it then pops up with in 60 seconds the system will shut down along, other times is says profile cannot be loaded, you'll be logged in with a default one.. then i get an error thats nearly as wide as the screen with no writing but a giant button, then the parser error, this time with 599.

and round and round we go

i have tried manually restoring an earlier recovery point but no go

oh, now it has started the windows validation error in safe mode as well, its getting progressively worse.

well.. adding a second user account in safe mode has killed it, it loads up to the "welcome" screen and goes no further!

(at least i got rid of the errors)

I'm not trying to argue but his post says he has done the following:

- He looked for the registry entries that the KB referred to but found that they did not exist.
- The hard drive is detected and listed, if it was assigned something other than C he would have seen.
- He found another lead that pointed to the fact that the OEMBIOS.bin file may be corrupt so he attempted to copy over a good version.
- He has attempted to do a system restore from a previous point with no luck.
- He attempted to create a second user account but has made safe mode inaccessible.

Were all his troubleshooting steps correct? Probably not. But why point him to a KB the he says he already read and found that it is not applicable to him?

I didn't as he does not specify what information he has looked at from Microsoft, "the reg entry pointed to me by microsoft doesnt exist" is not a very helpful pointer to other members trying to help don't you agree?

I give up trying to help on this forum, it's becoming too might of a fighting ground, it's not hard to understand why the OP hasn't bothered to update his thread.

I guess. Maybe I inferred way too much reading his post and the KB. iptech I wasn't trying to fight you lol. If I came across that way I apologize. I'm just used to people reading the title of a thread or the title of a news article and commenting on them without having read the content. But, looking at it, I guess it didn't thoroughly explain.

Im very sorry to have cause so much grief, I tried to give as much information as i could, the issues with safe mode seem to be random, i am allowed access to safemode once again, but still have had no luck.

yes the info on the MS article referring to the cryptography registry entry is what I looked at, and there was no cryptography entry at the locations specified.

I only have the forum set to notify me once a day (im in australia so while you think i just havent gotten on for hours im actually sleeping/playing Halo

I know the strain instant notifications can have on a board and was trying to be considerate of the owners.

currently i have access to safemode where i can create multiple users but none of them will launch in normal mode.

@Basic, if you think my troubleshooting steps were incorrect, what would you suggest I had done? (the steps listed may not have been in exact order as I posted here after a day of trying various things, but knowing how the users here get frustrated with incomplete posts, i tried to give as much information as possible.

@Iptech I am very sorry I do appreciate your help, i would hate to think that my noobishness on these forums would lead to your giving up offering help to those that need it..

As it's XP, I would try a repair install* before re-imaging the drive.

* This is a suggestion not a RFC.

Latest Update, I have tried doing a repair install, as the system has XP Pro, I fired up my XP Pro OEM Cd, it goes through the process then asks for serial, neither the serial under the laptop nor the one backed up from the registry will work, from what I can gather, its been upgraded from HOME to PRO, but i have no idea if it was the Retail, Upgrade or OEM versions used (well with my luck it would be a dedicated upgrade version, the only 1 I dont have)

the licence sticker under the laptop shows no version information, just a key.

This was setup by the Queensland education department, so i have a feeling it could be some corp licence or something..

too many hours spent on this damn thing.. abandoning it for Ghost re-image.

exactly whats has happened.
As i have done the reimage and am now getting the hive error listed on the website.

so there you go, it was NORTONS all along!

Yes, but only because I was able to get into the OS after the re image. Norton removed, system make running perfectly, no errors at all
