I had a master disk and dropped it and it cracked so I was looking through my iso's to reburn it and couldnt find it. So I downloaded vista ultimate w/sp2 32 bit from technet and tried to use the remove ei cfg tool and it says it couldnt find it..

So I burned the disk anyway and went and tried to install with the key from the bottom of the computer and it says invalid key...so I went ahead and picked the version of vista installed and it installed, however when trying to activate its telling me its not the right key. USUALLY, with my previous disk, I just typed the key and it installed the correct version for me..

Am I missing something or am I not using the right tool? I have been using this disk for a year or more and forgot how I made this master disk!

Thanks!

Correct me if I am wrong but only the version which had Anytime Upgrade included on them had the cfg file on them and the other versions. Technet's versions are straight retails copies which are version specific.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought the ei cfg removal tool was only needed on Windows 7 as the Vista install disc already has any version readily available as long as you have the correct product key.

Your right the cfg only applies to 7.

When you install vista don't put the key in during the installation process, just click next, you are then prompted for which version you want to install.

yea i will give it a try again, but why would it not work like it used to? just curious, I will try to give it a reinstall and try again. Will report back in a few.

WOW sorry to waste your time! I guess my vision is not exactly what I thought it was, the sticker is pretty much worn out and I had mistaken an X for a K and an 8 for a B, just now figured out the X...

its installing fine now!

Thanks for helping me clarify

I do wish the stickers stood up to more abuse or there was a better way to go about it.

I agree with you! I like how sometimes you will see them in the battery bay, where they are out of the way. Considering they are called LAPtops, they are going to be on peoples laps with their jeans rubbing on that sticker..

I have never seen one in a battery bay, but I like the idea. I think towers should have the sticker on the inside of the cover or at least a second copy of it.

Probably because M$ say it should be placed on the exterior of the PC presumably to be visible, those that put it in the battery bay are breaking the terms - Thank God:D:D

Newer ones have a more durable laquer according to M$ - We'll see over time if they last better than the older type

Whenever I see a COA looking tatty but still ledgeable, I cover them with a peice of sellotape so as to protect them, in addition I also create a file in the root with the key on it just in case.
