Having trouble desoldering a dc jack

Your $30 Weller iron is never going to substitute for a hot air station. Let me guess, your dead station was an Aoyue?

No, iwas a Blackjack Solderwerks solder station that had a soldering iron, desoldering gun, and a hot air gun, all in one unit. For some reason it won't get hot long enough to do anything with. I called the company that I purchased it from and all they told me was that the heating element or one of the IC chips could be bad and offered to look at it for a minimum fee of $85, which I told the rep that I could buy the entire unit new for $230 lol.

Interesting, thanks. I had heard good things about Blackjack Solderwerks, too, so I'm surprised.

Actually, that's why I purchased one, because of the reviews I had read concerning their products. I'm not going to knock them after only making one purchase, but if I do decide to make another purchase from them it will be done with caution lol.

I've used an Aoyue for over 2 years and it works great. One of the best $100 i've spent on a tool
Okay, thanks. I mentioned it because they have been a real problem for people who bought the INT 732 rework station, even after upgrading the controller IC. And their hot air wand is notoriously poor at even heat distribution if you're using it for BGA reflows, even after the turbine mod to spin the air as it exits the nozzle. But at $100, not a big problem. At $230 and their quoted repair charge, I'd be pretty ticked.

I ended up purchasing an X-TRONIC #6040 - SMD - ESD SAFE - 2 in 1 Digital Hot Air Rework Soldering Iron Station, and it made my life so much easier.

Luckily i have some old laptops and desktops laying around to hone my soldering skills.

TY all for the advice.

Basil
