Has anyone figured out why sometimes HP scan doesn't see local computer?

One installation the client calls periodically claiming the scanner doesn't work. I reinstalled the client Ap, hp deskjet 8600 and showed them how to scan from their desktop (which always works, but apparently that isn't good enough). So I find myself going onsite tomorrow to reboot the printer, and workstations (2) until it starts working.. Yes I never really make any real changes each time but sooner or later it works.

New router in place still behaves that way.

Not sure if you can on the scanner side but are you using IP addresses instead of names. Firewall off on the workstations? What happens when anti-malware is disabled?

Good points BUT... Like I said I don't have to make any changes after testing and testing it starts working. But the IP issue can't be the fix as it is trying to find the workstation from the printer, the workstation ALWAYS finds the printer. Maybe I will take note if a simple reboot alone on the printer works.

What's running name resolution for the internal network...a server, or just the router? Bet it's a router...and internal resolution can be poor with them. Try assigning DHCP reservations to the 2x destinations.

The Brother multifunction printer/scanners have the same problem if you leave them configured to auto-discover computers in a basic workgroup/router-based environment. Computers will disappear from the 'scan to' list periodically.

With the Brother units though, you can log into the web interface and configure network profiles instead, to enable scanning to a particular PC or shared folder. Not sure if you can do something similar with HP units ...

Yup you can....(depending on the model)...but basically it comes down to name resolution. On workgroups/peer to peer networks, name resolution is typically poor/unreliable. This of course varies from router to router...as different routers, even different firmware versions on the same routers, will behave differently with local DNS tables, or even none at all if all they do is pass down the ISPs DNS servers, leaving the local network to just broadcasts. And then master browser issues...all those headaches when you don't have a good local DNS service. The cached names on the MFP likely get stale if the router issued different IP addresses to clients, and they picked up different IPs. Hence why a power cycle or three...of all the local devices, can "fix" the issue. For a period of time...

This is why the "Scan from local desktop always works", because the printer has a statically assigned IP.

Yup. So try with the workstation...easy enough to add another reservation. Or...if the client is fine with pulling from workstation instead of pushing from the MFP...then, that's the way they gotta do it.

I can't do this is this scenario as they are all laptops.

Sure you can...do a Google search for the term we used a few times up above...."DHCP Reservation"
The DHCP service...(be it on a router, or linux appliance, or a server)....is told to give the same IP address to a specific MAC address every time.

Also known as MAC address binding.

I've been fighting this too. 5 person office that had a $50 Netgear router, old HP HomeServer (v1), a few PCs with Windows 7, Windows 10 and two new HP OfficeJet Pros - 8720 and 8740.

Just put in new UniFi Security Gateway and UniFi switch and AP, plus a new Synology server. Set it as the Master Browser.

It was mentioned on an HP forum to set the printers with static IPs. I'm going to give everything a reserved address.
