Gun control / Anti gun control

Honestly, I didn't read all these posts, but they are all the same, so I assume I read them already....

These arguments I have learned are a waste of breath. Those who are pro gun ban will not be wavered what soever. You try to use rational argument and show examples. All of these will be dismissed for a la'la land idea of what would happen after a ban. They forget how Prohibition went, and just assume a ban would mean all guns would disappear with the click of some fingers.

The only thing you can give these people is absolutely nothing. If you are are a hunter and don't care about hand guns, give them nothing. You give them hand guns, the next thing will be your hunting rifles. I don't care what they say, the look for anything to complain about. Its all bad stuff. Hand guns will lead to hunting rifles.... What ever you let them have is just the start. Give them nothing!

2 time deployed US Army solider. Hope that the freedoms, that you all backup to send people to fight for, are backed by the people. IF they are not, why not spend your time saying you want out of the war? keep killing US people over what? something you don't care about? THEN worry about gun laws? Your neighbors' son is in Afghanistan.

Well said and thank you for serving.

I will just say this...

I am a gun owner. Multiple guns, actually. Similarly, there are more guns than people in the United States (estimated 310 million guns to an estimated 305 million Americans, Congressional Research Group, 2009). I have never had to shoot anyone, but I am prepared to do so to defend my life or defend the life of my loved ones.

As mentioned, I own several guns and styles of them. Small handguns, large handguns, shotguns, rifles, and shorter barrelled rifles. I do not own any assault rifles as they are well defined as burst (3-4 round) or fully automatic. I am a firm believer that my shot placement is more important than "spraying and praying", a personal preference. My "purpose" for each of them is for their intended use. Handguns for concealed or open carry, shotguns for numerous assailants together, long barrelled rifles for long shots, and short barrelled rifles for everything in between. Yes, I only have 2 hands but will select the right one for the situation, if I can.

I own guns for a simple reason and I'm not going to sugarcoat it like many do or give some emperical or recreational reason: I own them to kill people. That is their purpose as outlined above and nothing else. I am not a duck hunter. I do practice just like anyone would pratice or perform driving on a regular basis to keep the skill at level. And yes, shooting can be fun. But, the purpose for them remains the same as I stated above.

I am not paranoid. I do not believe that people are out to get me, I am not mixed with the Mob, nor do I live in a bad neighborhood. Sometimes bad stuff happens to good people and trying to make sense of it or see some pattern is the utter definition of insanity. Most people try to make sense of tragedy. It is human nature. But random acts are random acts and trying to understand it will always result in disappointment.

From my half decade of firefighting I make it a habit that in my car I carry extrication gloves, a full EMT crash kit, a small fire extinguisher, and numerous other tools. I am not expecting my car to spontaneously catch fire or to start playing ambulance at crash scenes, it is simply a precaution. If you have the tools, they have a chance to make a difference in a given situation. If you don't, they are useless to you in a time of need. Similarly, if you don't have the skills to use them, they are just as helpful as a wad of wet paper.

I am a firm believer that everyone is individually responsible for themselves and their loved ones. Whether it's widely known or not, up until recently I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for law enforcement, medical and fire for over 7 years. By law, as affirmed by the Supereme Court, the government has no duty to protect any individual person. You are truly - and legally - responsible for yourself.

You do not have a right to police protection. You do not have a right to fire protection. You do not have a right to medical assistance or care in any way. You cannot sue the government for not responding - or responding fast enough. I have several personal experiences in being on the phone with someone while they were actively being assaulted or stabbed, even shot. I had no magic wand to make it stop or to end their suffering. The general population should not be disillusioned into thinking otherwise: a phone call will not protect you or stop an attacker.

I believe that it would be a great thing if we could rid the world of guns and never have to use them. But then reality seeps back in and it is here and going nowhere. Violence escalates, new weapons are developed every day. We have literally hundreds of nuclear weapons. Heavily regulated, downsized, still in existence... And easily duplicatable by anyone with the knowledge and means to do so.

Similarly with firearms, they are going nowhere. England heavily regulates firearms and has had some success doing so. However, the general population, criminals and even the government have firearms. When the English constibulary voluntarily removes all firearms ownership from themselves and is confident they have rid the island of them, then I'll be interested in seeing the outcome. Until and unless they do so, they apparently know something about the reality of getting rid of firearms and out of the hands of criminals.

That's it.

Sorry I rambled a bit there. I had a few when I decided it was a good idea to post on the forums. Lol. Never a good idea to mix drinking and the internet.

Here in Michigan we have been having people come to the gun range to rent a gun and commit suicide. Any of these people would have found the means. If not guns, something else.

Someone posted something about shootings never happening at shooting ranges??

Dont worry though, I'm sure when it happens at your gun range, you'll be able to defend yourself better than a navy seal sniper with over 150 confirmed kills.
