GFI Max... Really This Slow?

So I've been experimenting with the trial of GFI Max.

Trying to run automated tasks usually leave me with 'awaiting synchronization' or 'awaiting first run'... This can last for hours or days.

The software is running on the machine and I have the try icon showing. I've also forced checks to go through again. I've also never once had an alert email properly show up, even with a windows xp box without AV, GFI Max has failed to alert me of this.. in fact it even gave a green check for 'no managed av installed'.

The software appears to be useful, however I've not had it work very well so far.

Anyone else experiencing any such issues?

If you install GFI on a computer with no AV then it does not check for an AV unless you tell it and even then it must be one they recognise.

I have not had any problems with my scripts not running for days, usually I upload a script then add it to my test PC and have it run that night.

I've had this all too often. Added a script yesterday, give the script a Run command to go site-wide and.... 7 have done it, 27 are awaiting first run, and 9 are awaiting sync.
In my case, being residentials, half of my machines may be offline at any given time and might only be on for 30 minutes at a time when they check their email. That said, yeah, it can take far too long to get things going.

FYI - Running checks and running tasks are not connected.

Scripts are not updated until the system has run it's Daily Checks. Unless you force an early recheck they will not get the notice until the standard Daily Check is done.

Alright, sounds good...

I just need it to properly report big events like av outage, etc... MSE was used btw once it detected no av.

I'm still in my trial so I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it and play with the settings, I'm wondering if I just put my planned scripts into windows itself when I setup the customer and then just use GFI to monitor for hardware issues.

What I really want is to be able to see how many infections, etc on the machine. I know I need Manage AV for that but I simply don't like vipre, nor to many of the clients I've worked with in the area.

My understanding is GFI won't alert you on infections unless you are using Managed AV. I'm not sure how it works for residential, but you might be able to use a Cloud based AV (Kaspersky and Trend might have some solution, but it might only be for SMB.)

If it was me, I would just throw on KAV and be done with it. If they get an infection they will probably call you back. Enable Take Control and you can easily jump in their computer to clean their infection if that is the issue.

Actually, GFI works with :
(Takes deep breath)

Avast
Avira
BitDefender
CA Anti-Virus
Eset NOD32
F-Secure
G Data
AVG (pro)
Kaspersky
Mcafee
MSE
Norman
Panda
Sophos
Symantec
Trend Micro
Webroot
Windows Defender

There's also a pre-written batch script to check for MBAM Pro scans, and if you can write a batch file to check into the scans for any other service you can do that as well.

GFI is alot more robust than people give them credit for ... if you can write a batch script it will run it.

Actually Kaspersky 2014 wasn't on their list of working checks for AV check service. They might have it fixed by now, but last time I looked, and asked via email, 2014 was not working.

FYI gfi doesn't work with mcafee or avast - at least not the home versions. They / I have instead got script check to check that the security centre is reporting the av is up to date. Annoying but all I can do for now
