Getting spammed from GFI MAX memory usage alerts, help

Hey Folks,

We just started using GFI max and have it installed on a 2008 R2 VM thats running on a ESXI5.0 host. Ever since installing GFI we are getting spammed with memory usage alerts.

Here is one of the messages, we are getting them once a day, sometimes more.

**The test Performance Monitoring Check - Memory Usage failed.
Additional information : 262 Pages/Second

All of the messages are similar, however the pages/second changes (it varies from 150 to 300 pages/second)

The server is pretty basic, running Vmware Esxi 5.0 which hosts 1 Virtual machine of Server 2008 R2. It has 8GB of RAM. It's being used as a DC for a small office.

looking at the logs, in the past 8 days they haven't had any memory useage over 3.5GB of ram. all the other monitors look perfectly fine except the "pages / second" monitor. It seems to be having a spike up to 7000-10000 pages/second very briefly every few hours.

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at? or is it possible I just have the thresholds for alerts set too low? thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You have to tweak the memory usage checks. The defaults are too low. I ran into this same issue. Just make a few adjustments and then re-monitor it. If it fails again, check the report, and make the necessary adjustments.

its set at 100 right now for the threshold. which seems to be too low. any suggestions on what to set the thresholds?

I think that's going to vary a lot from server to server. Your best best is to get a baseline when the server is in use and base it off of that.

Same issue here too. I was getting alerts during nightly backups so I set the threshold to a little higher than what it was reporting.

Don't do what I did. I directed all the alerts to a folder using a rule and GFI became worthless to me.

thanks for the replies, I made some adjustments that seem to have helped. I jumped into the Vsphere control center and noticed an error in there too, so its possible its related. but the server seems to be performing just fine.

I would like to know when should I be concerned of an error like this what is the pages per second is at 1700/pages per second?

It depends on the server and the role it is playing. If end users are not complaining of slow downs when this is happening then you are fine and you should probably adjust your threshold higher so that you don't get hit with unneeded alerts.

Thanks for the reply. I asked the users if they experienced latency on the server. They said that it does become slow and unresponsive on the times I see the page file spike between a 1000 and 4000 pages per second. The server that is being used as a BMC web interface for a workflow management system.

The server is a VM also running Windows Server 2012 R2 it has 12GB of Ram and constantly running on 8GB of RAM.

Don't forget you have maintenance hours as well. If you're doing big backups every night at 10PM, you can set a 1 hour maintenance interval where GFI will not send you alerts about the performance.

Can you give it (the VM) any more RAM? That sounds like not very much...
