General tech websites

So I did a quick search but couldn't find anything similar. I was wondering what other tech related websites people go to for tech news? This isn't so much about troubleshooting websites but basically where do you go to get your geek on? My list of website is depressingly small, any recommendations would be good. They are just useful for a rainy day lunch or if I'm up to date on jobs and waiting on some scans to complete.


Technibble (obviously!) - the general chat section really since we are not talking about troubleshooting advice for this thread.

http://www.ghacks.net/ - Okay for occasionally finding new software but I've found myself going off it recently.
http://www.howtogeek.com/ - Pretty much the same as above.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/ - more of a tabloid style and more frequently this is NSFW. I like some of the journalists here but some are just crap. It's been going downhill quite a bit recently.

http://krebsonsecurity.com/ - great site but infrequent articles. His breadcrumbs articles are always interesting to read though.

Wired.com / wired.co.uk - Good easy reading with some interesting threat level articles.

http://arstechnica.co.uk/ - one of my favourites recently.

http://spectrum.ieee.org/ - more engineering based but I like it.

http://motherboard.vice.com/ - somewhere between wired and gizmodo.


Any suggestions would be welcome! Again i'm not looking for troubleshooting tips, just somewhere with interesting articles to feed my inner geek!

I really don't much anymore......don't have the time. Or...more like...I prefer just NOT to be on the computer as much, when at home. Really the only "tech" site is this one I frequent. But in the old days.....

*HardOCP....I used to just hit the networking forums. Some people like us are there...although tended to get elitist...by people who were big enterprise techs, so it got a bit "Cisco only" there and the SMB products I'd want to talk about got snubbed.

*WildersSecurity...a good Antivirus related website, they've opened up to some other software products, but years ago it used to be the official support forums for Eset, and they had a larger "other AV" forum too.

*Untangles support forums

*ARS Technica

*SmallNetBuilder....Tim Higgins site, I used to hit that often, it's home network gear...he has a lot of detailed router reviews and performance charts.

..those were some of my "daily hits" I'd bounce around throughout the morning, day, and evening. Aside from that...it was online gaming forums, and policing the forums over at Speedguide.Net...I'm staff over there and friends with the guys that own it. The forums were huge there years ago, dying now. Philip is the guy who wrote the TCP Optimizer and other broadband tweaks.

These days..I just hit this forum for the "techie" part, and a Harley motorcycle forum. Occasionally keep an eye on Speedguide, and that's pretty much it.

www.lifehacker.com has a mixture of everything in there. I visit it once in awhile.com

If you are looking for the latest Tech news, Techmeme is still a pretty good resource.

Since BYOD is a way of life for my corporate customers, the Consumer technology section of CIO has some good insights and interesting articles.

When they combined Gizmodo with IO9, it became a a weird combination of Sci Fi, Tech, and Pop Culture, and doesn't seem to do any of them well anymore.

I still check out [H] and that's where I've seen and recognized YeOld from. I only check out their GenMay forum though and once in a very great while I'll skim through the rest. I used to be a big fan of Anandtech's forums but the people there are shitty. This is probably one of my only forums other than [H] that I visit. Well reddit seems to have replaced a lot of forums as well.

I like its tongue in cheek approach and it has many sections, but having the time to view it is the problem!

I used to be a big fan of Anandtech's forums.

Oh yeah...that was a big one I used to regularly hit....way back in the...Win9X days I think. I forgot about that one..I was there a lot. I think my memory confused that with ARS Tech when I mentioned ARS above..I mean Anandtech.

I came across https://backchannel.com/ yesterday as well, quite a broad scope but they have the goal of not just repeating the same old stories from the rest of the web and the few articles I have had time to read I enjoyed.

I've been following "the register" for 15+ years. Been one of my off-beat favorites. Put "BOFH" and "fondleslab" into my vocabulary long ago heh....

I haven't followed them in years, but a.s.r and a.t-s.r used to be fun to follow.

The fun part was when people would spam a.s.r. Talk about poor target choice.

The Backchannel seems like it's all reposts from the tech section of Medium.com . there are many interesting articles, not just tech related, on medium.
