I found a free piece of software that allows you to keep tack of invoices, quotes and orders. It's not too bad to be free. I won't be actually using the print invoice part, just using it to keep track of them. I already have a layout that I use and like.

Features

* Easily create invoices, quotes and orders.
* Email or fax directly from the application.
* Run multiple businesses from within the same program. (Only for the Plus version)
* Schedule re-occuring invoices.
* Weblet allows other users within the organisation to access data and create invoices. (Only for the Plus version)
* MAPI or SMTP email send settings include Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
* Includes standard reports such as accounting, sales person, unpaid invoices and more.
* Supports multiple tax rates for countries where required (e.g. Canada).
* Regional format settings include currency symbol, decimal point display and paper size.
* Automatically send statements to customers with overdue payments.
* Integrated backup of data.
* Configure the layout of invoices including the invoice title, alignment, font size and foot comment.
* Save or send invoices as PDF files.

Edit: I almost left this out. They have it for Windows, Mac and Linux.

This looks great since it's free and includes customer management as well. I'll try it out later and give an update.

MS Office Accounting Express

MS Office Accounting Express is also free. I'm using the 2009 version. It has ads in the bottom, but only for the user, not on printed documents. Allows upgrade to pro for like $200, but the features the free one has are good enough for me. I don't do payroll, which is a big feature for the pro ver., so not missing much.

Did take a while to get everything setup in it though, but that would probably be the same for most everything that allows customization. I actually moved from a paid program called Mobile Invoice, to this one.

You can do this with personal database creator although I charge 19.95 :)
personaldatabasecreator.com
Select invoice mode when creating a new file and read the help documentation.

I use simple invoices. I have a Linux server setup on a DMZ at my home office. Since its web based, I can hit it anywhere. The beta version even works on most smart phones...including the iPhone. so you can log in, create an invoice and email it right to the client right after the job is done.

I've also tried the MS Accounting Express and Quickbooks simple start. I keep going back to simple invoices because it is web based. But I will give this software a try too. Thanks!

This is good stuff, I have been using it as a copy for over a week now and for free software I am impressed, good link mate thanks!

I'll have to take a look at that one.

I've been working with this issue a bit lately and found another free option - billingboss.com It is part of the Sage/Simply business line of applications. I can see using it to pump out invoices online at a customers location, much like you would with bambooinvoice. It is not fancy but it works great.

That seems neat. I'd rather have the information on my computer and not the net.

This looks great. I use an IPhone app called Omni Invoice. I can create an invoice and send it as an email right in front of my client. The only thing is that they charge $10 and its still in its infant stage so as of right now I would not recomend it. Free is always better.

I too am looking for a web based central point of management that not only can we use to make our company more green, but really trying to centralize everything, and also be able to market it to our clients. Of course, so we could offer it to them as a free alternative, and maybe get the server build, or hosting out of it + support, and maintenance. I could really see that being a great asset to our companies business plans.

If you are referring to invocing etc. Have you tried Autotask? Right before I got laid off, the company I worked for purchased it. It can tie in with quickbooks, has a ticketing systems, CRM, calendar, ability to create tickets from e-mails received in outlook, has a client portal to create and view the status of tickets and it is web based installed in your server or hosted by the manufacturer for companies that do not have their own servers.

Autotask allows you to track time to the point that you can find billable time. I would use it but I am too small since I do on-site work. This app would be perfect for businesses that have monthly contracts. Autotask is made specifically to IT companies.

and no I am not spamming here. :D

You could just use quickbooks simplestart as well at least for in shop sales. I use personal database creator for expense tracking and quickbooks simple start for pos credit card processing.

I can't believe that no one even mentioned Intuits Billing Manager? It's free and has a very nice looking interface. It also e-mails the client for you and attaches a pdf invoice for them. Looks really nice, actually. You do not have to deal with the headache of installing scripts on servers, messing with SQL databases, etc.

I am, however, still looking for an easier method of keeping track of accounting records... :D

I downloaded and have been trying out Express Invoice today. Seems to be nice with the customer management. Thanks for the link.
