Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.

Hey, if he really wants to he can probably replace the motherboard with something you'd like better and still come out ahead. For that matter if cryptocurrencies shoot back up he can probably sell the 1070ti to someone for twice the cost of a GTX980 and pocket the difference.

I shudder to think what kind of nasty off-brand mass-produced shoddy graphics card it has along with its rinky-dinked power supply and HORRIBLE airflow case. Sure, on paper the raw specs are impressive for the price. But in reality it's just a bucket of junk. The graphics card probably looks like a toy. No one with a brain would buy that bare graphics card, for mining or anything else.

I never got used to how graphics cards are done these days, but I think the last customer we did anything special for just wanted the ability to do dual or triple monitors - everyone else just uses the stock video on business systems.

And for me personally, I think the last machine I was actually using as a desktop where it could take a decent video card may have been that old server I've mentioned elsewhere - dual Xeons, 4GB RAM and a SATA RAID controller whose branding I can't recall. All running Linux, though I don't recall which version. Whole machine's been gone for years now.

Oh, and I think it had one PCIe slot. A small one. Small enough that I Dremeled a notch in the connector area of a cheap PCIe graphics card so I could pop it into that slot - I did the card instead of cutting out the back of the slot because I couldn't be bothered pulling the motherboard out and couldn't get a good angle for trying to melt out the back edge of what was probably an x4 slot.

It's been 21 years since my last confession.

Today I have purchased a prebuilt gaming PC.

And even worse it was an Alienware!

My current custom built PC has a R9 290x that was on it's way out and finally kicked the bucket a couple days ago. Was looking to replace it with a 1070ti and of course the price for those, if you can find it in stock anywhere are about $750.

I found I could buy a new Alienware Aurora R7 with a 1070ti, 16gb DDR4, and a much newer i5 6 core cpu than the one I have for $1000. I have SSDs to throw in and the mb has an M.2 slot so I will eventually grab a Samsung 1tb m.2 SSD to replace the 2.5s I have.

The case doesn't look as ugly as I usually expect from Alienware systems, but I think all the hardware used is off the shelf stuff so I could probably swap it all into my Define R5 case.

Will probably toss the 290x and use the rest of the system as a FreeNas + Plex server to handle my Blu-ray and, eventually, UHD rips.

But man, a sad day when a life long system builder chose a prebuild PC over custom making one. Thanks Crypominers and NAND shortage.

If it make you feel better, take it all apart, use the pieces to build your own..................LOL!

Is that a locked processor and if not can it even be adjusted in the bios of that alienware? If not your soul has indeed been tainted ;)
Yes it's locked, only processors that support over clocking are ones that end in a "K".

But I only once ever over clocked my CPU. And when I was done I was like "wow! I don't notice any difference!" and have never done it again since.

The rinkydink psu is getting swapped with my 650w Corsair PSU along with the case, so essentially I am just buying it for the parts. I'll use the rinky PSU on the nas maybe. If I get sketched out by it I'll just swap it in the future. All this equipment will be on UPS systems anyways so it's less likely to have a failure than for typical users.

Shucks, and I'm replacing the case!

............
Plus I'd lose the ON-SITE warranty (to see a Dell tech walk into my place while I'm fixing computers to fix my computer would be hilarious, especially after I take a call and loudly announce my price that will undoubtedly be several times what poor Dellman is making with this job).

Two things:
1 The motherboard has a non-standard front panel header. It's a long stip that controls LEDs and the normal front panel stuff.
2. You're losing the warranty if you put the parts in another case, anyway.

Speaking of cases, one thing I've always wanted to do was just mount the components on the wall, sans-case. I've always thought that would be an interesting conversation piece. Of course, I've also always though that would be work and easy for customers to touch, so I've never actually done it.

I have to confess that I was in Walmart this morning when I saw this desktop on rollback for $1259 and saw it had an I7 7700, 16gb ddr4 ram, 256 ssd, with a 1070 graphics card, which is currently around $800, I stopped to actually think it might be a good deal. That is until I looked it up online and saw that the motherboard and the rest of it, is cheap hp parts, I ran away and hope nobody noticed me, It felt like a sin just stopping to look at it.

Jesus, man, don't tell people that you considered spending over a grand for an HP! Have some pride, man!

The current price of video cards will make you consider things you will regret. I was worried if I did buy it, I might get banned from this forum. lol

So, Dell was predicting a nearly 4 week lead time before I'd get it.

Then I found an MSI 1080 in stock on newegg for $599. I jumped on it, and ordered it. I checked 30 mins later and it was out of stock again.

I waited until Newegg shipped it and sent me the tracking info, and then cancelled the Alienware order. I should have my PC back up and running better than ever by tomorrow night. I will also sleep easier knowing I pulled myself back from the dark side.

Who am I kidding, I won't sleep at all. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is out and I'll be playing that till my eyes bleed.

Boy do I kick myself in the (you know where) for not buying that 1070 priced at $299 a little less than a year ago. Prices are crazy now, and my 8 year old HD 5870 is clinging to dear life.

Oh well, I guess I don't game all that much any more and the geriatric GPU I have now will still play Diablo 3 and Hearthstone.

I can always dust off the PS4.
