Force Win 8.1 repair

When I boot from the Recovery USB and click TROUBLESHOOT>ADVANCED OPTIONS.
The options System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair and Command Prompt are available, but Start Settings is not there.



The information in the link for step 4 is incorrect. It does not work as a method to get into safe mode (at least not on my systems using the Recovery USB I created).

I just reran the tests twice on my workshop PC and it definitely does not work.
I also tested it on a second machine, a Win 8.1 laptop, and "Start Settings" still does not appear.

Try it on one of your systems see if it works for you.

It depends on the system. It works on some not on others. I've had it work on most UEFI systems.

I tried it on a lovely piece of junk called the HPp6-2330 with win 8.1 (UEFI)
After I made the recovery drive, a google search told me I had to press F1 at bootup to get into recovery mode, then it worked as in the link. So not quite the same, but close.

Wasn't the "F8 key" easier to use - to boot to SAFE mode? Instead of all of the other hoops we have to jump thru now....?

Sure, but that's not really the point. Lots of things were simpler before. But 8 has been out almost 3 years, time to move forward.

I can only work with the OS in front of me. It's not black art, it's an OS that has certain procedures that need to be done to get what you want.
And from what I have seen and heard, Win 10 isn't any easier.

This right here. It's fun to complain about how the changes made our lives more difficult (and they certainly have), but the bottom line is we don't get a vote about these things. We have to figure out how to work in the environment that we are given. That's how we help our customers, and that's why we get the big bucks. (well, medium bucks anyway).

Agreed. I've not tried to do it but it appears to be disabled and you have to enable it. Which is stupid.

Re-enable it? How does one go about doing so?

It does work on Win 10. You can do it from a winpe disk (I used Winpe 5/macrium free).
