A flash disk was given to me by a client today...he said, "that the original capacity of the flash disk is 1gb..." when he tried to reformat the disk, 1gb turns into 8gb and then it write protects itself... have you ever encountered this kind of problem...? is there a software that can turn off the write protect status of this flash disk..? this is a generic flash disk... thanks & god bless...:confused:

There definitely isn't a write protect switch on it right? Have you tried it on another computer?

You could also do a low level format which may do the trick but honestly they are so cheap I would just throw that one out and buy a new one.

Is it a "Name Brand" flash drive like Sony?
Reason I ask is I have seen counterfeit flash drives do some really screwy crap.
in today's reality a counterfeit would be of a 32GB or higher, but several years ago I bought 100 256MB flash drives for $29 each and that was a killer deal. a 1 GB would have been $50.
Cheap Chinese counterfeits always seem to have a name brand.
my 2 cents... (or 0.1366 CNY)

@nick
there's no switch...i have tried it to other computers but still the message is the same..write protect...i also tried low level formatter but the disk could not find the drive...

@gray
no, it has no name brand....

anyway, thanks for the input...i will try to figure out what cause this...i will give an update soon....if not, i will let him buy a new one...Thanks & God bless...

I'm going to assume you are using a Windows computer. Have you tried accessing the Disk Manager under Admin Tools and see if the drive can be mounted?

yes i can...but still write protect... is there any other possible solution...? thanks & God bless...

Well, unless this flash drive has some sort of sentimental value I would just throw it out after spending 5 minutes to remove the gold contacts. At the current time I can't post links in my post, but I can tell you that there are literally 100's of websites out there that are selling 8gb flash drives for around $10 to $20 with shipping.

Also, before anyone laughs at my statement about removing the gold contacts I would just like to give you an explanation. Thinking about the future, far future. After about 20 to 30 years of collection those little gold contacts can give you a nice little bonus in your retirement. Taking 5 minutes out of my day to recover some easily removable gold contacts is worth it. If it's heavily soldered on I wouldn't bother, but still it's worth it in the long run.
