So I've just seen I can how get fibre, they are saying 25mb, up from 3mb do first job tomorrow is to order it. I'm now like a kid at Christmas and can't sleep. Sad? Maybe.....

Paul, I can understand. In the mid to late 90's I lived in a large town where they would not allow the cable TV company to add high speed internet. No DSL in the immediate area. But the towns all around it had signed up. Then I moved to my current location in 2000 or so. While the cable TV provider had high speed internet in many areas it was not in our neighborhood. Tried DSL and it was nominally 368 x 64 but much slower. Was not until 2006 or so that I got cable internet. I do know the joy you will soon experience.

I went years with dial-up in my area because I couldn't get cable. It was until around 2004 that they finally got Cable. After buying my house the area is a lot better with speeds. I can agree, you are going to feel like a kid at Christmas.

Having had dial up, satellite broadband and now 4 meg ADSL for some time, I guess we're frustratingly so near but so far - we have just had a Fibre cabinet installed in our street but have been told it will not be enabled for at least 3 months!

I have to walk past it every day........o_O:)

All ordered, now just to wait for installation.

I was told it was going to be April before I could get it but it has now moved to now.

So with pleasure must come pain in the form on a tooth removal later today. Swings and Roundabouts!

I'm still waiting for my local Exchange to be upgraded to FTTC, all the cabinets in the village are FTTC'd up, but the Exchange takes longer to sort out apparently.

If it takes too long I might investigate this £3K government grant scheme to get a decent connection - currently I'm on a 6.5Mb one

A large client of mine has been waiting over a year for Comcast to install 50meg/50meg fiber. The contract was signed October 2013. The holdup has been Baltimore City permit office. Mid December the fiber was at the end of the block. The last leg has to be bored to the building. The permit is still not approved. Monthly cost is $1950 with 5 year contract. You folks in the UK have it made with internet speed and prices.

Current connect is wireless with 10mbps down and 3 up. This is used by 40+ employees. The other option is DSL or T1. They've had both.

Is this for your home or shop? I can't imagine doing computer repair work on a 3 mb line. When my family switched from 56k we went straight to I think 5mbps, and from there quickly to 10, then 50. I'm at home now with 25, and at the shop is 50.

Our area just got upgraded to 50/8 as a minimum speed through our local cable company. However, we can get as high as 150/8, which I do currently have for my home. The nice thing about my business line is that I get 5 static IPs and 50/8 for only $39.99/month. If I were to upgrade the business line to a higher download speed the price skyrockets, even though the upload speed is capped at 8.

It's tough..........but my basement is my shop also.

A lot of downloads get done overnight.

I remember when I got FTTC 2 years ago. I was amazed by the speed. I plumped for the 80/20 unlimited package but to tell you the truth the only time I use that full speed is if I'm uploading content or downloading a movie for the weekend.

I've cut it back to the 40Meg package and have had not noticable drop in use (also saved myself around £400 a year)

Here i the video I did when I first got.....fun times :)

I'm currently sitting in the office trying to get a head of myself by doing some update downloads to save time next week. I'm looking forward to not having to do this. As for the throttling on the speedest servers I can confirm it as I know for certain the local Carlisle server does limit your test. The firm who runs it is based about 1 miles from me.

Yeah I was told not to use the Carlisle server again :)

What type of updates? windows?

Yeah Windows Updates, I have 95% local via WSUS Offline, but there is still a few more. So I'm just downloading them now, I'll most likely set third party updates off too, Save some times new weeks and lets me catch a few episodes of breaking bad (watching it again)
