Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

There's a button for that. Or there is an option to tell it how to deal with all files conflicts before even running the copy

I've definitely run into date-time stamp issues with Fabs restore in the past and always been presented, by Fabs itself, with the various "keep this one versus that one versus both" option.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.17.0.6907 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- Support for LibreWolf browser profiles.
- Items can now adjust in 9 columns instead of 8 for larger screens.

Fixed:
- When there were redirected folders to OneDrive (like Desktop, Documents or Pictures) and OneDrive was also selected for backup/transfer, files were copied twice: once for original item processing and another one as OneDrive subfolder. Now, if such a redirection is spotted while processing OneDrive, it will be excluded in order to avoid duplicates like this. The behavior will be the same if user has redirected his folders to other cloud providers such as Google Drive, Dropbox and iCloud Drive instead of OneDrive.
- When restoring, if public items files were processed, wifi profiles were not imported at first attempt, product keys text file was not put back on desktop either, a second restore attempt was necessary for that.
- Translation tool could send language file several times to the developer.
- Several graphical glitches have been fixed.

The ability to add user accounts with Fabs when transferring from multiple accounts is quite useful. Only problem is that the default Max Password Age (maxpwage) setting results in the forcing of a password change on those new accounts (after about 42 days).

The weird thing is that adding a new local account using the Settings GUI or OOBE does not use that setting, and those accounts don't have password expiry. Is it possible for Fabs to replicate the account maxpwage setting when transferring and creating accounts?

Currently I need to execute the following command after Fabs creates new accounts, to prevent password expiry:
net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited

That's a bit strange.
My user creation code already includes a flag that says that password will not expire.
I have just tested account creation (a single one) from Fab's and "Password never expires" box was already checked.
A thing that's sure is that I do not want to throw a "net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited" command in addition since this will have an impact on ALL user accounts on the machine and this is clearly not wanted on every computer.

Edit: it looks like on some machines, even if the UF_DONT_EXPIRE_PASSWD flag is used at account creation, Windows can just ignore it and password will finally expire 42 days later.
Toi address that, I would have to pass this instruction again after user account creation. Since it works fine on my machines, that's what I call a "blind fix".

Edit 2: I have added a piece of code that will change the password expiration attribute. It is called just after account creation. To make sure it works (and not be this finally that blind), I have disabled the first "UF_DONT_EXPIRE_PASSWD" flag setting occurence in my code and the "Password never expires" box was still checked when testing. Then I have re-enabled it so there is still original instruction and the second one if an expirating password is detected anyway.
If there are still issues like that in the future, then there might be some kind of active password policy on the machine, preventing Fab's from doing this.

Was that added at some point in the last few years? If so my experience with passwords expiring might be dated. I've been issuing the accounts maxpwage:unlimited command for a few years after customers reporting password expiry prior to that. I never got around to bringing it up until now.

The net user /add command also results in password expiry of 42 days, which is why I know about the accounts maxpwage command.

Thanks for your efforts Fabs. No hurry for release but I'll try and test that in the next version.

Interesting - we have always just created the user account manually before restoring data with Fabs. We always have a break glass admin account, and we use the command line when logged in there to create the new user, assign them to the administrators group if desired, and set the pw to never expire. I should script that with prompts, but it's so simple, we just do it by hand. Finally, we reboot into the user account, and do the restore.

If you are dealing with domain accounts, then you will still have to do this. This feature is designed to make local accounts.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.17.0.6932 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Fixed:
- In some cases, when using the program to create local user accounts for restore or transfer jobs, their passwords could expire 42 days later (this is a default setting in Windows when creating user accounts from the command line) despite an instruction in the code to set a never expiring password. Original code is kept but an additional instruction to explicitly set this attribute after account creation has been added.
- Minor cosmetic issue: "Local Windows Policies" item remained in blue even when another color was specified in [BRANDING] section of the autobackup.ini file.
- Wallpaper image file name was missing from the script that applies desktop's wallpaper at logon after restore/transfer.

Updated to the latest version and encountered the bug where the backup job is finished but still processing additional folders and can't be cancelled.

I thought I got this one but obviously not...
I have no clue about what's causing it so I have do it blindly, hoping to get rid of it once for all

You can also get update through the bundled updater tool: Click "Check for updates" on program's main window, then click the "Get Fab's AutoBackup7.X" link.

@fabs if I remember correctly there is a discount for license renewal. I'll pay for it either way as this is the most valuable tool and the one I use the most. Just checking.

Thanks for your constant work on this valuable product.

There is a coupon for technibble business kit customers. Otherwise, if you are not, then I can look at your your account so I can check if you have already used one for your current license. I will provide a discount coupon anyway. Just DM your order reference/number and I'll check.

Question: does Fabs make a folder at c:\vss_c_shadowcopy\... when your running a backup?

I started to backup a guy's system and the resulting total backup was going to be 124 GB, so I ran my disk space tool SpaceMonger.exe and there's a huge folder on C with that name. This actually happened on two computers that I'm doing today.

Feature request 1: could we get a sortable list by largest folders first? i.e. when you're ready to start the job and you've selected everything and you check the box "show total size before copy", you'll get a dialog box that says backup size 127GB or whatever and you can look at the list of what it's going to process, but as I scanned the list it's hard to tell how it added up so quick. Would be cool to have them sorted (or have the option to) by size with the largest on top.

Feature request 2: I never want to backup OST files but I do want PST files. Can we get a checkbox or some other way to easily only get PSTs and not OSTs? Only really an issue when someone has a lot of files - just want to be sure I select and deselect appropriately.

That's I good idea, I agree with this one. Currently (I believe) deselecting the OST files for copying also means the account info associated with the OST files will not be copied.

I vaguely remember this coming up several years ago. Maybe it's difficult to implement the account copying without OSTs, perhaps because it would complicate the GUI. This issue might be worth revisiting, because OST files normally aren't needed (they're recreated automatically).
