ERD Commander - Confusing Information

ERD Commander was for Windows XP. For Vista and Win7 Microsoft changed the name to MSDaRT in the optimization packs. ERD Commander is for XP I think MSDART 5.5. MSDaRT 6.0 32bit is for Vista 32bit (64bit for 64bit) MSDaRT 6.5 is for Win7 (32bit for 32bit and 64bit for 64bit)

So, the ERD Commander in the MSData 6.5 is for XP and not Windows 7 (which is what I read into the info in the link)?

It looks like they also call that erd commander but basically 5.5 is xp, 6.0 vista and 6.5 win 7. If you try to use a version that is not the correct version it will tell you so.

I think that is part of mdop 2007 and that isn't available for download by the looks
OK. This is what I need to do and the reason that I am looking for ERD Commander for XP at the moment:
The computer when booting in SAFE or regular mode comes up with an error which I have researched and the hive is toast.
Restoring to last valid working configuration does not resolve the problem.
I would like to go back to a previous restore point.
How can I accomplish that (XP PRO sp3)?

You can use any bootable disc (mini XP is Windows based, duh. :D) to copy the backup hives from the .regbak folder.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the OP said the problem was on an XP machine. Therefore, there is no .regback or volume shadow, right?

Doing a manual system restore in XP using the contents of C:\System Volume Information\_restore{guid}\RPxxx\snapshot is pretty standard.

Also, the Hirens boot disk has the ability to do a manual system restore.

p.s. I'm a little tired, so hope I'm not misunderstanding something and shooting myself in the foot :)

Yes, it is XP PRO sp3.
I am looking at the Hirens.
Which function are you referring to?

On ERD Commander, with XP you can use ERD Commander 2007. If you can't find it at microsoft, you can find a 30 day trial version elsewhere but you may have to extend the evaluation period to get it to work. The trial file to look for is called MSDaRT50Eval.msi

The MSDaRT50Eval.msi (Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT ) 5.0 Evaluation) file contains a trial version of ERD Commander 2007 (also known as ERD 50) When the MSDaRT50Eval.msi file is installed it creates an ISO image called erd50.iso which you can then use to burn a live CD of ERD Commander 2007.

On XP you can even boot to command prompt, or from the XP CD, to go into the snapshot folder to snag the 5 registry files to do a manual restore.

Or yank the drive, slave it to a good running rig..browse it w/explorer and copy what's needed.
