Editing permissions of restored files in Vista

Hello. First post after reading for the last few days. Cool place.

I brought an HP DV6000 laptop back to it's original image after it failed to install Vista SP1. The original image is on the recovery partition on the hard drive. Before I reimaged it, I had the HP software make a backup of the data on the drive, and it backed up the audio, video and pictures before wiping the drive and starting the reimage.

Long story short, I moved all the music back to the customers profile from the recovered profile, and he no longer has rights to play the music. Windows Media Player gives the (un)helpful message "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct." I'm attempting to play the file from explorer, and no proxy settings are set, so the message is useless.

I've found that if I the user full access permissions to the file directly, he's able to play it. Currently, the Administrators group has full access to all the files. The specific user accound has full access to the directories the music files are in, but isn't listed in the security properties of the music file itself. I'm certain the permissions are set to populate files and folders underneath the folder that I originally set the permission for (user\music).

So I can change the permissions for the folder the file is in all day, and it won't change a thing, though if I change the permission on the file itself, it plays.

Is there a batch permission editor, where I can choose files in directories, and apply the permissions without having to do one at a time? I realise that setting the permissions on the directory and having those permissions propogate down should work, but it's not.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

That is odd. As far as I know when you change access right you have the option to affect all the contents of the folder you want to change. Then make the user the owner of the folder and files. This should work

I forgot. Also look at the logs and or google the error code if any. I had one where I moved the favorites folder after a re-image and I could not save any new favorites. I googled the error the and first search result was from microsoft on how to fix it (and it did fix the issue).

I also had similar issues with Itunes where folders were moved around and the issue was to give the proper rights.

You definitely can replace permissions. The fact it works when you change file but not folder suggests it's almost certainly a permisions issue. You don't need batch scripting etc. You might need to read up on permissions though

To be sure: Under security tab, goto advanced, remove check for inherit from parent, then copy, then check the box to replace permissions on all child objects. Obviously ensure you have your correct permissions set, you can also ensure correct through effective permissions, but I'll not confuse you. This will work.
