So I have a free HP dv6911om that I was seeing what I could do with it. Hard drive has failed PC Doctor tests so I'm going to toss that out. The laptop screen is really dim, but when I plug in an external monitor the external monitor brightness is just fine. We can skip the whole "HP sucks" bit and just concentrate on if this is worth fixing or not. I know the dv6000's have the GPU overheating issue, but I was wondering if a dim screen is one of the symptoms or if this might be another issue.

Here is what I'm not willing to do:
- Attempt to reflow the motherboard
Here is what I'm willing to do:
- Replace an inverter or LCD (I'd rather not) if that may be the problem
- Part out the laptop - Would you sell the LCD in this scenario?
- Sell the laptop to someone who wants to practice reflowing
- Replace the hard drive and get recovery media if fixing the dim display is an inexpensive fix
