I got a call from someone who cant send email from their domain.com email address to someone else in the office who has an email address like domain.onmicrosoft.com

He wasn't sure exactly what type of email system he has.

I was wondering if anyone has run into this before.

Looks like Microsoft Office 365 / Hosted Exchange?

Edit: Normally, when you sign up for Office 365 for Business, you get a default domain that's in the format xxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com

Anyway, once you add a custom domain (verify DNS, change nameservers, etc.) you normally change over all your users from the default onmicrosoft domain over to your custom domain. Maybe something along these lines?

I agree it is a cloud service issue. I migrated clients from in-house to the cloud. I experienced this issue and I resolved it by going into AD using Advanced Features. Search for the user, open the attribute editor tab, go into proxyaddresses and add the value smtp:example@domain.com. I do not know if you have access to AD but this will correct the issue.

if this is a hybrid deploy, you might want to check the user with domain.onmicrosoft.com if he/she has an onprem exchange account or cloud only. If the account is only in cloud, you need to mail-enable that user. Also check if other people can send to this person, if yes, then fix can be as simple as deleting the address cache in outlook
