Does 'Square' Have A Doppelganger In The UK?

I went through the sign up process with this the other day. It's on hold now, after I realised the android app hasn't been completed yet >.<

Darren please keep us all updated on how your getting on with izettle

do they have a min amount or value of transactions every month? as mastercard not our most popular method of payment (mostly visa).
No minimum, but I'm yet to actually take a card payment... Visa is certainly king of the hill as far as popularity in the UK. I'm tempted to charge my own MasterCard something to see how well it works!
It will undoubtedly be a more useful service when they introduce visa.

Thats what I did.

Type in amount, insert card, click pay. It then authorises and asked for a client signature which they can do with their finger on the screen.
You can also add a description and take a photo, which can be sent to the client as a receipt, it also stores the photo's with the transaction in your account. Useful if you ever need to prove who used the card.

Pro's: Quick, simple & the photo is useful

Con's: no visa yet.

I haven't decided if not needing a PIN is a good or bad thing yet. Clients could feel uneasy about using chip & PIN in a phone......

I wasn't aware of the photo bit... sounds useful!

I had the same thought's about not needing a PIN. If I didn't know any better and someone asked me to put my pin number into their iPhone I'd certainly have a question or two, so would imagine your average customer, who are usually not the most tech savvy people, hence coming to us, would be in a similar boat

Well i'm accepted for both and have just been emailed the merchant forms from Mpowa. Both are sending readers. I know there is a charge(don't know what yet) for the merchant side of things but i'm on the fence with which one to go for.

From what I can see:

Mpowa
+ already up with Visa
+ prefer the reader in the top port
- fee for merchant account

IZettle
+ lower costs
- no visa yet
- reader looks vulnerable in that bottom port.

Any input from people already using either is appreciated. I want to use this now and have no idea how far Visa is being used by IZettle.

I'm trying to clarify the fees in total for each supplier. They obviously don't have to supply a phone/mobile sim for a reader to work as it is built into the phone/ipad.

This is the answer I just got back from Mpowa.

Dear Martyn

There are no monthly fees with Mpowa.

For card transactions 2.95% plus 25p per transaction.
Billed to you at the end of each month, the payment is taken from your debit/credit card.

Cash and cheque transactions are free.

I hope that clarifies it.
Kind regards,

Amanda

I don't know if i'm missing something but is there any reason not to go with Mpowa over IZettle purely for the fact they have Visa support now?

I got the forms as an attachment for merchant application from Mpowa and it appears not. No mention of fees just filling out forms and sending in utility bills etc. That's what i was getting at in my email to them. It there isn't i might as well go with them.

More updates from IZettle

Hi Martyn,

For now you can take MasterCard, American Express and Diners payments with iZettle. We're constantly working on making it possible to take cards from more networks, including Visa, but we don't have a set date for it just yet.

Please get back to us should you have any further questions.
Best regards,

I'm fairly sure mPowa when they first opened up shop the other week required you to already have a merchant account, or they would assist in getting you one, which I was fairly sure meant not through them. This may have now changed, please keep us posted, if there is no monthly fee then it does sound a good option.

Another update.

The Izettle dongle arrived and it is not as flimsy as I first thought. The Izettle dongle you slot you card in and the MPowa one you swipe the card. No merchant account required for IZettle it seems and Mpowa required quite a lot of ducumentation and scanned/photgraphed documentation i.e. passport, utility etc. I sent all the doc pictures(MPowa accept phone camera pics) off the weekend and they have just emailed their acceptance of the pics. All being equal I think Mpowa has the edge purely for Visa support now.

Martyn,
I did request that mPowa contact me regarding their merchant account via the app a few weeks ago, however I've still not heard from them. Do you mind me asking exactly what documentation they required from you etc? You can send me a private message if you prefer.

Cheers,

Darren

Basically they start with a form for merchant application. Either for a Sole Trader or Limited Company. I'm a sole trader.

Your name, address, phone, email as a person and a business, passport number and place of issue. Type of business, products and services, likely amount of transactions, bank details recent utility bill, recent bank statement, evidence of your business( I sent business insurance), scan of passport photo. That's it. You can take photos of everything with your phone and email the lot, that is acceptable to them. Now I'm waiting.

Just ordered the izettle card reader for my wife. She's going to be the guinea pig before I decide to go with them. She runs a nails and beauty biz here from home and often has the chance to upsell retail products on the spot which is useful as her clients often only have enough cash to pay for the treatment and are willing to buy aftercare products if she accepted cards.

Apparently there is a way to use VISA for payments now but it it's not as convenient. See the lower part of this page: http://help.izettle.com/customer/portal/articles/531055-how-do-i-take-a-card-payment-
