Docking Station vs No Docking Station

Maybe I am thinking about how to google this to hard, or maybe it can not be done:

I have a laptop that when I am at work uses dual monitors. The laptops, and an external that hooks up to the docking station.

When at work, I use the external as the main screen, as it is MUCH larger. When I undock it and take it home, I just use the laptop screen.

Is there a way to set it up so, using a single logon profile, allows me to choose how I am using the laptop - so that my icons don't always jump around. Maybe some kind of power management add on that retains my settings depending on my work environment?

If I make no sense, let me know and I will try and re clarify as dummy proof as possible.

Thanks

You could start by setting the screens to the same resolution. But that would defeat the purpose of the larger monitor. I don't know of another option but I'd love to find out.

What about using the second monitor under your display settings? Should allow you to set it up with a different resolution, but of course you would have to switch it back and forth.... so maybe not the answer.
