Have a customer that wants to disable access to a certain website domain without disabling email.

AFAIK they don't currently have access to the hosted site, they only hold/control the domain.

I had originally just pointed the domain to nothing, but after I had done that they informed me they still need email access.

Is there a way to do this as I am not sure.

Should just be a case of deleting A and CNAME records but keeping MX.

My web site is long gone and the domain is parked but the MX record keeps my email active. You need to be able to look at the current MX record or know at least who hosts their email.

As indicated they are two different DNS records. In fact I ran my self hosted email for years, like 10, before I ever setup a website. Deleting the A and CNAME should default to loading whatever the hosting company provides, if anything. But make sure they don't fall for the "DNS is scr3w3ed" trap. There are spiders crawling which find those mismatches and they then try to con unsuspecting users out of a few hundred or thousand of dollars.
